Menu Ideas?

In 2wks, DH and I are having our holiday party/house warming open house thing. Do you think it's fine to just do appetizers? I picture it as people coming and going throughout the night (I already have several guests who have another party to attend that night as well) so I really don't want to do a meal. MIL thinks we should do a big pot of chili/soup, but I don't even know if I want to go that far. Thoughts/ideas?

Also, if you have any good, easy appetizer recipes, I'd love to hear them!  I know I'm going to do cheese/crackers and a veggie tray and xmas cookies. DH wants to do sushi, but not sure if he'll actually do it or not. I'll probably get a sheet pizza cut up into smaller squares and maybe a bread bowl dip.

Re: Menu Ideas?

  • I wouldn't expect more than appetizers. Your MIL is nuts... a bunch of people eating chili in a new house sounds like a huge mess waiting to happen.

I would put out cheese/crackers, veggie tray and cookies just like you said.  Maybe add a dip to the mix? You can get Wegmans subs cut into smaller pieces or they cut the wraps into these little pinwheel things. That might be good if you want more hearty food.

  • Apps are great!  My cousin brought the mini pigs in a blanket to Thanksgiving and my mom just placed them in the oven.  They were a huge hit.
  • I think that appetizers are perfect, and yeah, I would not want people eating chili in my brand new house.  I think that MrsWhite's suggestions are perfect.  I make a spinach and artichoke dip in a mini crockpot that poeple really like and you can dip scoops or veggies in it.  (mix 2/3 cups of mayo and sour cream, one cup of grated parm cheese, cut up can of artichoke hearts, block of frozen spinach, thawed)  Mix all together and warm up for about an hour.

  •  I would definitely just do apps.  Maybe do a few lighter (like veggies and such) and a few that are a littl heartier (cheesy dips, rye dip, etc)

One of my go-to gathering recipes is Grape Jelly Meatballs. (sounds weird, but it's just like a sweet and sour/cocktail sauce type of sauce)

1 bag of frozen meatballs (plain, not Italian style, and frozen works best here, not homemade)

    1 jar of chili sauce

1 small jar of grape jelly

You can throw all of the ingrediants in a crock pot on low and just leave them for several hours.  Stir once or twice and that's it.  I just leave the crock pot on the table with a cup full of 1/2 skewers or long tooth picks.

They are delicious, filling and easy to make.  Plus people just love when I tell them they are "grape jelly"... they are like "no way".

  • We had a party like this the first two years we were in this house. I actually supplied baked goods, drinks, and a few apps, and asked everyone to bring an app to share. My go-to apps are Chicken Enchilada Dip, meatballs in the crockpot with Brown Sugar Barbecue Sauce, and Spinach Dip in a bread bowl. For baked goods I did maybe four kinds of cookies, some fudge, and Chex Muddy Buddies.

  • I was going to suggest the meatballs too, although I am not sure how much better than chili they are haha. They went over great at DH's family thanksgiving yesterday, they were gone in 10 mins or less.
