My husband and I have names picked out already and we excitedly shared them with family over the holiday weekend. If we have a girl we are naming her after my husband's late grandmother, Cecilia Grace. If we have a boy we are naming him Caleb Daniel. We have always loved the name Caleb and want to stick with "C" names. Daniel is my father's name.
When we told my Mother-In-Law the names she immediately said she hated the name Caleb, which was hurtful, especially since we chose to name a girl after her mother. When we asked about her feelings she said her friend's granddaughter had a stillborn who she planned to name Caleb and the name was jinxed.
I don't really know this friend of hers and I honestly think it was in bad taste to bring it up to us, because I am a little superstitious and now I feel like if we find out we are having a boy we are either going to have to change the name, or worry about problems with delivery for the rest of the pregnancy. Do you think we should consider new boy names? Was my Mother-In-Law right to tell us about the name in the first place? Any advice would be help!
Re: MIL thinks baby name is jinxed?
Get out of my mind!
name your child what you want and do not listen to what other people have to say.
This.
And this is reason #24933432194659413659924359496435 why announcing potential baby names so early if at all can backfire.
Well I'm not superstitious, but I do associate names with the people I knew that had those names...I tend to have a bad feeling about Jessicas now cuz all the Jessicas I've known are horrible. But to not name your kid because of a precious baby that had no chance...that's entirely up to you. If it was me and that was my choice I wouldn't let someone else's issues change my mind. But if I thought all I ever was going to see by naming my kid Jessica was those crazy Jessicas I would definitely change my mind. Ultimately it's your baby and you know yourself. Don't let others influence such an important event in your life. If you want Caleb it's very likely that when your boy is born she will change her tune about the name Caleb.
Sounds like your MIL and my MIL should gtg and play. When we told my MIL that we had picked out the name Brianna for our DD #!, she flat out told us,and everyone at my baby shower that she didn't like the name Brianna and that she was going to call her Gracie. Seriously, who does that?
I have learned to just let her talk and ignore most of what she says and to not take it personal - as it's just her crazy nature/personality. Do what you want for your children. You are their mother- not her. I like your names and their meanings to you and your DH. No name is Jinxed - she should not have said those things - but too late - just try to let those comments just roll off you - I know it's hard and hurtful - but in the end it will be for the best.

Sure we are!
That's kind of hilarious, my husband and I feel the same way. I have a cousin named Jessica and whew she is a *** and he has a sister named Jessica and she is a ***. We totally have met so many Jesssica's that are either crazy or a ***!
I've known many Jessica's (including myself) that are neither crazy nor bitchy. Well, there's one who's bitchy, but the rest of us are just fine!
