Multiples

Tell me about your nursing nest.

I'm in need of wisdom from mamas of multiples.

I've been so fortunate to have my MIL help with our twins for the first six weeks, but she's going home now, and I'm going to have to figure this all out on my own now.

First things first: for those of you who nursed (and for those of you who bottlefed, for that matter), tell me about your nest. Where did you get set up for those hours of feeding? How did you handle both twins, in terms of positioning, moving them around, etc? What did you have nearby to help you out?  What did you wish you had?

Re: Tell me about your nursing nest.

  • This was hard for me at first, it gets WAY easier when they are "sturdier", have head/neck control, etc. But I feed both babies at once (I EP so I feed them bottles of breastmilk) on my couch in the living room, with a boppy on either side of me. When they were smaller I stuffed receiving blankets in the "hole" part of the boppy, now they fit in there with no blankets or anything. Now I actually pump and feed them both, all at once (with a hands free pumping bra of course!). I always keep a RNP sleeper near by, because it's easy to just stick a baby in. My house is set up pretty nice though, It's a cape cod so the nursery, master bedroom, kitchen and living room are all the 1st floor so it's easy to move around! Trust me, it's easier to tandem feed (well, with bottles) as they get older! I only tandem breast fed a few times before we gave up and went to EPing, BFing never worked out for us unfortunately.  Good luck!

  • I tandem nurse my twins. I set up either in my bed or on the couch downstairs. Either place, I set up in the middle with my EZ 2 Nurse Twin pillow. Before I sit down I put one baby down on a contour pillow right next to me so they can't roll around too much (I'm right there so he wouldn't be able to roll off without me noticing that he was starting to move first). I pick up the second baby and the nursing pillow, sit down with the pillow on my lap, and put the second baby on the nursing pillow. I then reach over, pick up the first baby and put that baby on the nursing pillow also. I still need to use nipple shields to tandem nurse them so I then put on the shields and latch each baby on. When one is done, I lean forward so the baby that is still BFing doesn't come off, then I pick up the baby that's done and burp him. If it's R, then I can set him back down on the contour pillow and just keep a hand on him. If it's A, I have to keep him on my chest because he will spit up if he goes on his back. I tried to use the boppies instead of the contour pillows but my boys are still too little and they fall too far into the whole. I might have to try blankets like PP suggested.

  • I obviously do not have experience nursing two yet, but I bookmarked this video from kellymom and hope to be able to do something similar.

This was a really helpful video!  I have no idea how I am ever going to be able to do that, but I really hope I can.

Make SURE you get a post-partum nurse to help you figure out how to get tandem nursing set up in the hospital bed. It's still challenging to get it set up again at home, but at least you'll understand the basics of what will need to happen. Then... try, try again until you've got it. :)

great video! I'm going to save it as well.  That looks very similar to how I nursed my girls (singletons), so I am hoping its not too hard to get a hang of.
