really silly question on waterbirth

Sooooo sorry for this question..... Does the water get changed normally a few times during the labor? I'm totally sold on the benefits of water birth, but I just keep thinking bout how with all the pushing and straining I'm gonna end up in a poop soup! I know it sound silly and I swear this isn't m MUD! Ill be seeing my midwife in a few weeks and will get more info then but I was just wondering.... And also if your water breaks while in the water, how can they tell if there is merconium(sp?) Or infection if you are in the water? Thanks in advance, please don't judge my stupidity!

    My water was not changed. The midwife scooped out any poop with a fishnet. Yes it is gross but you don't think about it at the time.

    I never thought I wanted a water birth because I thought, "Ew! You're just sitting in a soup of prebirth grossness!" Yeah, I ended up delivering in the tub. Like PP said, they fish out any ickiness. I was totally apologizing for it between pushes, ha ha! It was fine, though, it was not as gross as I thought it would be. Delivering the placenta (which I did in bed) seemed way grosser. I actually felt kind of clean after being in the tub- it washed off sweat and whatnot.

    Oh, and, no, they didn't change the water, but I was only in it for, maybe 2 hours? They probably would have if I had asked and was willing to be in bed or the shower again for that long, but I loved the tub and did not want to leave it.

    I was in the water for a long time with DS...about 8 hours (once i got in I wasn't getting out, and my labor was 30 hours total). They didn't really change the water, but because I was in there so long the water would cool down, so they'd drain some and top it up with fresh hot water. I don't think I pooped in the water - I wasn't too concerned about it at the time - but if I did, the nurses took quick care of it. After DS was born the water was a little murky, but the tub had a shower head attachment, so I got a quick spray down before getting out, and actually felt kinda clean and refreshed.

    I should say too I was in the water for hours, and didn't poop at all or have anything gross in it until it was time to push, which was like 9 hours later. I did get out for a couple of hours and they had to top it off with warm water. I will say that when they emptied it after I was out it was pretty gross, but at that point I was out and they had sprayed me down, I delivered the placenta on the bed, and I just didn't care!
