Potty Training

Shes 3 and she won't even sit on the potty

DD is 3 and she won't even sit on the potty.  She is very smart (her pediatriacin even remarked this) but she is resisting potty training, I think on purpose.  She has used the potty maybe a total of 5 times since we started trying about 6 months ago.  I have tried leaving her in wet/dirty underwear and diapers (her pediatriacian suggested this) and she got an infection and didn't care.  I have tried talking to her, reading her books about pottying, letting her watch potty training videos etc... I am BEYOND FRUSTRATED.  She is too old to be wearing pull ups and I am tired of the cost of them.  Someone today (a coworker who has 2 children) said I should try punisihing her, is this too harsh? Any other suggestions?

  • I'm in the same boat! I feel for you. I'm letting my DD run around in panties. I found that she'll at least tell me when she's wet.

  • Cant give you much advice as we are still "trying" to pt.. but, some of the suggestions I have heard;

    naked bum training at home.

    take her potty with you when you go if you havent before.

    rewards system for going.

    a musical potty that sings when you go pee or poo. (it has a pressure button on the bottom that triggers when the pee/poo hits the container.)

  • We're still in the process, but we made sitting on the potty while brushing teeth part of our bedtime routine- no pressure to actually go. He did not actually pee on the potty until we went bare butt for 2 days. He'd go in pull ups or underwear and not care at all. I think he'd be trained by now if he didn't have to do pullups at DCP. GL!

  • I'd do it supernanny style.

    Take away diapers, keep her naked, and only let her go outside to play if she puts underwear on. When she has accidents, make her clean it up (I have been doing this with my two year old for months, and it helps a lot). When there is a ton of dirty laundry to do, make her do it because she is the one who peed on the clothes. Make her responsible for it.

    reward her for success. I would try to avoid getting angry when she resists the potty, but I know that's easier said than done.That's why I recommend having her clean up her own mess, because it's not punishment, it's a natural consequence.

    This.  Take away the diapers, ignore the tantrums that ensue.  She will go in the potty sooner or later rather than continuously go all over herself.  Just be more stubborn than her.

  • My DD is doing great with the peeing for the most part (still in diapers for naps and night time).  Poop is another story.  She just goes right in her pants and then comes over and tells me or I'll see her in mid-poop and will rush her to the toilet...awesome!  Anyway, she seemed to really respond to treats and then we transitioned to stickers when she started going more.  We did 2 M&M's for pee and 5 for poop.  Now we just give her a sticker (she'll wear it or put it on her board) every time she goes.  I just have random ones in a container and she gets to pick one.

    Since your LO is not sitting, maybe you can show her a special treat or sticker container and explain she'll get X for going on the potty.  No worries, my neice didn't start until after 3 and picked it up quickly, now she's doing great.
