Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Question about Pacis?

SO DS is 4 months old now and still can't hold his paci on his own for more than a few minutes. I saw this other baby about 2 months old at the doctor and he held his the whole time, didn't drop it once. He had the same paci...the small round green ones, I forget what they're called. Its extremely frustrating having to put it back in his mouth every 2 minutes. I stopped using it for a while because of it but now he is extremely fussy so I'm trying to use them to calm him down again. I tried using the NUK brand but he doesn't like them. Any ideas? TIA

Re: Question about Pacis?

  • Are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding? Because if you are bottle feeding try the paci that has a  nipple similar to what you use during feeding....orrrr maybe your baby doesnt like pacis...not every baby does.

  • He might not like it/want it too. Not all babies use them.

  • you could always try another brand, MAM seems to be popular.

  • Try one of every pacifier you can find. Often there's 1 that baby will like, they're all slightly different. The only one DD will take is the Playtex Binky but she rarely uses it, I don't remember the last time she had it.

  • I really think it depends on the baby. DS is almost 5 months and has never kept a paci in. My best friend's little guy is 2 months and is never without it. I've tried every brand you can imagine. The only thing we got out of it is a basket full of paci's he won't touch. Now that he's getting older he does like to chew on them for teething so they're getting some use.

  • DD likes the Nuks, but only with the amber colored nipple.
  • Your LO may not like pacifiers. My LO never took to a paci & we tried 3 different ones. He is bottle fed too.

  • DD is 5 months and can't keep hers in either but its not a matter of not liking it.  I think she chews it more than sucking on it and therefore can't keep it in.  I know she likes it because she uses it to  sleep and it is the only thing to quiet her in the car.  These are the only times she gets it since I can't be constantly reinserting it and if she drops it the dog rips the nipple off.  We have found that the MAM ones stay in the best while she is sleeping.

I have heard that if you slightlt pull on it while they are sucking it will cause them to suck harder and  learn to keep it in but DD just lets me have it so this didn't help us but may help you.

On the plus side I figure I will be able to wean her of the paci easier...

  • do you need to use the paci?  he may not like it.  my daughter used to suck on hers for maybe a minute at a time and then spit it out, and i would have to find it and put it back in.. and then she'd spit it out.. and then i'd put it back in.. much to her amusement.  it became more of like a game, so i just stopped giving it to her altogether, and i don't think she misses it at all.  she has found her hands and sucks her thumb or her fingers now when she has the urge.  and in the end i'm just glad i won't have to deal with weaning her off the paci!

We had to do this with DS. Of course, the only soother he'll take is the most expensive one I've ever seen, the Natursutten Round, which was $10+tax!

Despite the price, I really do recommend it for anyone who has trouble keeping a soother in.

Yeah this is the problem I have. I know he likes it, it calms him down, he just drops it all the time! I will try pulling on it to see if him sucking harder helps. Thanks!
