so I had to go to the hospital for fluids yesterday. I was super dehydrated from just over a week of not being able to keep anything down (food or drink).
So I have started phenegran(m) now and feel a bit less nauseous, but I still feel sick when I eat and drink. I'm assuming it's b/c my stomach has shrunk to nothing. Any suggestions of what I should start with? I've been able to keep about half of what I've drank down so that's a big start, but I need to try food.
I got some pudding mix and will try that tonight, but beyond that I'm at a loss.
help.
Re: more adventures in sucky pregnancy woes
I'm sorry. That really sucks and I can totally relate because I had hyperemesis with three pregnancies. Anyways, did they offer to give you zofran with the phenegran? Phenegran never worked well for me and it made me a crazy person...
A lot of people recommend bland foods like potatos, broth, etc...but I always found that if I ate what sounded good at the exact moment then I was more than likely to keep it down. Sometimes that was potato chips, wings, salads, really anything. If I ate something that didn't sound good then it always came back up. The main thing is your fluid intake. You can survive for a good bit without food but not without liquids. Try popscicles, water, flavored water, sparkling water, ice chips, etc... Also, are you taking pre-natal vitamins? I was unable to take them for any pregnancy. Since you are already 24 weeks and still sick then you might want to talk with your dr. about stopping vitamins, it made a bit of a difference for me!
Also, if it's been a day or so and you haven't been able to keep anything down then I would suggest going to the dr for fluids before it comes to the point of dehydration. If you can keep from getting to the point of dehydration then you are more likely to be able to keep food down. It's a vicious cycle, the less you eat the less you feel like eating. It's better to keep ahead, IMO.
I haven't even attempted any of the vitamins I'm supposed to be taking.
I have zofran and tried it earlier this week, but it didn't seem to do anything. At least this stuff seems to not make me want to hurl immediately and i seem to keep some of what goes in down.
Good cal on popsicles, I think I'll ask the husband to go get me some.
Thanks for the advice. This is nothing I've ever gone through and I'm scared and frustrated :
This won't help now, but if you find yourself getting IV fluids again, ask them to give you IV zofran or phenergan. Then, get a meal in you ASAP.
I ended up in the hospital twice w/ tommy and both times downed a suffed potato afterwards. It was glorious!!!
Other ideas- small bites, of course:
peanut butter (take like 30 minutes to eat a spoonful)
small sips of drink (something more than just plain water)
ice pops
oatmeal
These were all mild enough that I didn't mind if I threw it back up.
Also, they have phenergan in suppository form if you can't keep the pills down. Good times.
I am so sorry. My biggest advice is to advocate for yourself. It is really hard to find a dr. who truly understands sickness to the point of dehydration and anything beyond your "typical" morning sickness. Since you are so far along, it's obviously gone well beyond your standard 12 week morning sickness. I had to switch drs. with my first right around 24 weeks because I ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks because I was so sick and he did nothing to help me prior to that point. Anyways, how much zofran were you taking? You can take it with the phenegran and that is a winning combo for some. Also, did they give you any via IV while you were getting hydrated? If not, I'd ask for that next time!
It's so hard but you really just have to try to stay ahead. I would get iv hydration and then that would keep me afloat for a few days and when I started to go downhill again, I would go back to the hospital for more and then I just kept repeating that cycle over and over again.
The good news is that you are growing a healthy baby, you can be sure of that! They suck all the nutrients out of you and feed themselves!
I had a hard first tri, but then it seemed to be fine until the last month or so when I had allergy induced asthma start buggering me up and now I'm here.
They did push meds with the iv and then after she gave me a shot of zofran on its own.
I've honestly been scared to eat. I'll try your suggestions though. I'm so desperate. And as trite as this sounds, I really don't want to cancel Disney next week
So I have to be eating by Tuesday or we'll have to cancel.
My doctor totally takes it serious, they are high risk/ IF doctors also so I'm comfortable with them taking me serious. Also, just seeing my doc's face at the hospital tells me he takes it serious. He said the placenta was awesome and wiggles was wiggling like crazy so obvs baby is happy as a clam.
Thanks for the help so much.

but my two spoons of oatmeal is still in my belly! even if my drink isn't.
I might try some broth/soup tomorrow. I had a bit of luck with tea earlier today, but realize I can't have 5 cups of tea a day :]
*hugs back*
OMG, I'm so sorry that you're still dealing with this. It is soooo awful, but to deal with it as long as you (and other Nesties) have - I just can't imagine.
I don't have much advice since mine cleared up around week 16 or so, but I can second PP that said to eat whatever sounds good to you at the moment. If it sounds yucky and you force yourself to eat it, the odds are good that it will come right back up. I'm sure you've experimented with this by now, but if not it's worth a shot. GL and I hope they find something to make you feel better soon. I can't imagine trying to do Disney with all this going on (the smells of all the food alone would be enough to put me out of commission).
Looking back, I'm not entirely sure what Emily and Abby had to grow on because I didn't eat much of anything while pregnant with either of them. I just sipped warm Coke and nibbled on what I could, when I could. I recall Salt and Vinegar chips provided temporary relief in some weeks.
I drank some Ensure and other meal replacement drinks from time to time but ended up hating all of them.
Just sips and bites here and there. One day at a time.
I don't have any advice, but I jut wanted to give you (((hugs))).
