DS is on his second ear infection. He had one at 3 months, and now this one. DH wants to get a referral to an ENT, but I think it's too early. The first one responded to Augmentin. This one - tried Omnicef, but he also had bronchitis and an eye infection. It cleared the wheezing but not the ears/eyes, so we're back on Augmentin (starting today).
Is there a guideline to the number of infections before tube talk?
Re: Ear infections: tubes?
DS #1 had 2 sets of tubes starting at 15 mths, they helped but didn't take care of the problem totally. He had infections ALL the time from 6 months on. It finally cleared when he turned 4.
Now DS #2 has started the same pattern, only he started at 4 mths. We started with amoxicillin, they cleared, but fluid still there, put on a preventative amox since he was still having a runny nose, ears infected anyway. Then we tried Augmentin, he was allergic. So we went to Zithromax. He is on the second round of that now because the fluid will not go AWAY!!!!!! My pedi is talking about tubes, but says that the ear canals are too small yet to even try. The tubes will just get clogged with ear wax, and wont work anyway. So......we wait.
To early. I believe it is more than 6 in 6 months or an infection that does not respond to treatment for more than 6 weeks. My bosses son just had tubes about a month ago.
2 infections is way to soon IMHO.
