LMP or O date?

When you saw your DR did he go off your LMP or your O date? My EDD for LMP is July but since I am a late O I am August based on O date.

Re: LMP or O date?

  • LMP, because they can never be sure when you ovulate thats why pregnancies last longer then 9 months because they actually start counting before you are pregnant

    if that makes sense

  • LMP, it's really hard to determine your ovulation date since it varies from one person to the next.

  • My Dr. uses LMP. I knew that I had O'd late so when they asked for my LMP I just adjusted it to match my O date. I had an us at 7 weeks and that dating matched my O date.

Not everyone would be comfortable with doing this though, so just know that your due date may be off until you have an ultrasound that can accurately date the pregnancy.

  • I told my doctor at my first visit (a meet and greet, basically) that I had been charting my BBT and had a good idea of when I ovulated, and he simply said, "Looks like it worked!" But he did not tell me an EDD at that appointment. I got my due date when I had my first in-office ultrasound, which dated the pregnancy two days ahead of my ovulation date and two days behind my LMP date.
  • Most people do not know their O day so I think most go with LMP...

However, some wait until they measure the baby...

  • If you have long cycles, you might consider using your O date or 'fudging' your LMP date to make it look like you o'd on day 14 of your cycle.  If they calculate using your LMP date and you get an earlier due date, it might make an issue at the end of pregnancy with them wanting to consider induction etc. when baby isn't really ready.

    This. Exactly.

I didn't chart with DD, but was pretty sure that I O'd about a week "late," since my cycles averaged around 5 weeks. I went in for an ultrasound at 8w4d by LMP. I measured 8w0d, so that agreed with a slightly earlier O date. But my OB said it had to be off by more than a week for her to change my EDD, so she kept my EDD per LMP. I didn't think it was a big deal... until I hit 42 weeks, and I was forced to be induced per the office policy, when really I was likely closer to 41 weeks. It all went fine, but I still wish I could have gone into labor on my own, and I think I would have, if my EDD had been correct.

I charted with DS, O'd 11 days "late," and told them from the start what my actual LMP was AND what "LMP" date they should use to CORRECTLY calculate my EDD. I had an early ultrasound that lined up with my charting date and so my midwife was happy to use the new EDD.

This time around, I charted again, and O'd 6 days "late." I'm not too concerned, because my new midwife doesn't do routine inductions for being overdue, and I think she'll trust my chart anyway. If she did do routine inductions, and didn't trust my chart, I'd insist on an early ultrasound and insist on adjusting my EDD, even if it was off by less than a week.
