Anyone else's hands randomly fall asleep?

For the past couple of weeks, I've woken up laying on my left side and one of my hands will be asleep. It doesn't happen every morning, but often enough to be annoying. Sometimes even if I'm sitting and my arm is bent, a hand will start to fall asleep. DH asked me if this is normal and I can only assume its because of how LO is positioned. He's still low, so I'm thinking that could be it. If I'm moving around, I'm fine.

Is this happening to anyone else?

  • Yep, me!  I usually wake up on either side and that arm/hand has fallen asleep.

  • Yes, this happens to me when I sleep.  I've noticed it happens when I sleep on my right side.  Half of my left hand will fall asleep and when I turn to sleep on my left side, it goes away.  My last doctor's visit I mentioned I sleep better on my right and if it's ok to do that, and she said it was perfectly fine.  Only issue is that sometimes I have to wake up to move so I can wake my hand up :)

  • Yep. It's also happened to me a few times while I'm awake, like yesterday when I was playing on my laptop. I asked my doc about it, he it's normal, just annoying!

  • You might be experiencing pregnancy induced carpel tunnel.  You can google it for more information.

I have it in both wrists and sleep with two wrist braces...when I wear them, my wrists do not fall asleep.  You can get the braces at any store (Walmart, Walgreens, Target).

  • I have it, read its normal and I think it has to do with extra weight and your blood flow going to baby instead of extremities.

Thats what I was thinking. All that extra blood flow, but didn't think about the extra weight. I'm glad I'm not the only one and I'm normal!

  • I get that too.  When I sleep or when I spend a lot of time with my hands in the air (like drying my hair or changing a shower curtain.)

  • Me too!  I didn't think much about it, but am glad I'm not the only one.

My doc told me it was the beginning stages of carpel tunnel and to wear a brace at night.  Mine was only in one hand, but now its moving to the other.

One thing though, Carpal tunnel syndrome is the term used when there is pressure on the median nerve which causes numbness in the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger. While it is very common during pregnancy, if it's your whole hand that is falling asleep (which is what I'm experiencing) it's more likely just from the blood flow.

However, if you do have CTS I would suggest tendon glide exercises. I do get CTS when I have done a ton of typing and find the tendon glides help a lot, I do them while driving (I'm sure people think I'm vogue-ing in the car!

  • Yes!  It always happens!  I actually wake up from it at night because it starts hurting, almost like a burning.  I looked online and it seems to be pretty common and goes away after about 3 weeks after birth.
