Babies: 0 - 3 Months

2 month old in a jumper?

My sister, has 3 kids,ages 14, 8 & 2 months.

She is thinking its ok to put her 2 month old in a jumper...Am I the only one thinking this isn't very safe? She still kinda bobs her head from lack of complete control. I've tried to explain that she's not ready for it, but I'd like to give her more than just advice from me. And I understand it's her baby, but I'll feel bad if she gets hurt & I could've given my sister more advice about it.

She says she will put blankets around her, but unless she plans on putting her in a neck brace as well, I just don't see how this is OK.

If you think it's safe, tell me why.

If you think it isn't safe, tell me why?

I'm just concerned that my sister isn't thinking about this throughly. My babies never went into jumpers until 4-6 months & I knew they had control.

  • Not okay until they have adequate head control

Exactly, DS was 4 months when we put him in a jumperoo.  The only thing that we put him in prior to that besides a bouncy seat was his Bumbo seat at 3 months (and even that was limited).

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this!!

But how do I tell her without being bossy & mean.

Our son is 10 weeks and we put him in his Bumbo for short periods of time. He's had pretty good head control since he was born, but I wouldn't put him in a jumper! He's find holding his head up when he's sitting, but I can't even imagine how much it would flop around if he were to jump...

  • oh helz no! forget head/neck control....bearing weight at that age could mess with spine development!

no idea what you can do.  maybe do some googling and send her articles saying 4 months is the generally starting age? it's not like she's a FTM but maybe she's forgotten a lot in the past 8yrs??

  • We put dd in her jumperoo just over 2 months, her head control was fine though and she really didn't bounce anyway

  • I know her 8 year old will try to make her jump & that will for sure cause her little neck to bounce around & I dont want my niece having a spinal cord injury.

She's trying to tell me she knows what she's doing, but this just isn't logical in my opinion.

I sent her an email about when baby should be ready to be in one, which is about 4 months & able to sit. But most likely, she's going to be mad at me.

  • Hi there,

i'm lurking a little bit  but I couldnt help but post about this subject.  firstly, it is NOT safe for your neice to be a in a jumper yet. her spine and hips are not capabale of bearing the unproportionate weight of her upper body and her neck cannot support her head.  that being said, is she using a new jumper or is it one she used with her older kids? if it is a new one, look it up online and look at the "user manual" it should have a suggested age on it, you can point this out to your neices mother.  Also, you can try googling articles about babies having hip or back issues from bearing too much weight too early (gtg get my LO down of else I would try looking something up for you)

I'm sure your Sister is going to be mad at you for interfering, but you need to make her understand you are NOT questioning her parenting, maybe say something like you are concerned about the type of jumper that she is using? (blame it on the jumper instead of her??)

    good luck!

  • The jumper is practically brand new. She got it when she found out she was pregnant from a friend & since she didn't have the space for it, she let me borrow it for my LO. Which, I didn't take it until my LO was 4 months, which is the recommended age for it.
