My in-laws took us out to dinner at a family-owned Italian restaurant for my birthday. Of course, everyone had to make a big deal out of it and they brought me their signature birthday dessert, tiramisu. I was about halfway through it when I realized what that funny taste was... it was full of alcohol. Ugh. I had no idea that "real" tiramisu was soaked in brandy. Not cooked, so the alcohol doesn't dissipate, it's actually soaked. I didn't eat the other half but I was so upset about it afterwards. I've been sooo careful about my diet because I want to do everything I can to help my baby be healthy... and then I get fed liquor in a dessert that I didn't want in the first place.
Someone please make me feel better and tell me that this isn't going to make my baby blind and mentally impaired.
Re: please tell me that tiramsu isn't going to give my baby fetal alcohol syndrome
It won't do anything to your baby. Did you get smashing drunk from the dessert? If not then don't stress. Plus you only ate half, you and your baby will be fine!
I was kidding about the FAS, I just wanted some reassurance while I'm sitting here feeling bad about the fact that I just fed my baby liquor. But thanks a lot for the unnecessary snark, that really helped.
if it was ok for you joke about FAS why can't she joke about a hangover?

A sense of humor and a thicker skin will do you worlds of good.
Your baby is going to come out with 5 arms and 3 heads.
Just kidding.
One dessert is just fine, I would stop worrying about it. But call your doc if you want to.

That's expecting quite a bit from a waiter/food server, IMO.

You should be more concernedwi the fact that true Italian tiramisu will have marscapone ( can be unpateurized) and raw eggs in it. I would be more concerned with that than the liqueur soaked lady fingers. However , most most restaurants make pasteurized versions of this dessert....I wouldn't be worried about any of it.
Things that make you go "hmmm"
Like others said, call the doc to feel better but I'm sure your in-laws knew you were pregnant if you are in the 2nd tri. Your MIL probably had plenty of tiramisu while she was pregnant and your husband came out fine.
Mine will probably have a tail in addition to the above. I had one small glass (maybe 2 oz) of champagne at each of the weddings I've been to (September and November). Not to mention the taste of communion wine I get when I dip my wafer into the chalice.
lol
Well said...
But I do have to say that Blue Bell ice cream makes a Tiramsu flavor, and yeah I devour it.... sounds like I'll be getting another pint of it today to eat during report at work. Mmmm thanks a bunch.
For all of the people out there saying there's raw eggs in it, you've probably never made a proper tiramisu.
The eggs get COOKED with the sugar to about 180F, which is well past the "danger zone".
Seriously, I think some of ya'll need to put down the books!
PS: It's Marsala wine, not brandy that is the alcohol in Tiramisu (classically)
Being someone in an Italian-American family with only two generations here, I find your post a bit funny....since you are incorrectly trying to correct others. FYI- Traditional tiramisu contains raw egg in the mascarpone with egg/sugar mixture( "Zabaglione"). Also, sweet Marsala is always mixed with espresso but anything from port to amaretto to Tia Maria liqueur can be used to drench the savoiardi.
Most American restaurants do not serve the version with raw egg...but if you were say pregnant and eating in NYC's Little Italy you might just want to make sure it's the " safe" version they are serving.
