allergy Moms, ?

DS has a friend in his class that is allergic to nuts, peanuts, milk and soy.  DS is bringing rice crispie treats for his birthday, I plan on buying vegan marshmallows for his one friend that for religious reasons does not eat gelatin but have no idea what to do for his friend that has allergies.  I know I can ask the Mom but was hoping to get suggestions before talking to her.  DS really does not want to exclude anyone.

  • I am not sure of the ingredients in rice krispie treats, is it the butter you would need to substitute? Earth balance makes a soy free "not butter spread" that could work.

  • Some marshmellows contain soy too. Make sure to read the label.

Yeah, I would need to substitute the butter.  Do you know if they sell that at the regular grocery store?

And thanks about the marshmallow, I will look into those.  I plan on buying vegan ones but not sure what they have in them.

  • Honestly, the allergy mom (if anything like me) probably won't have the child eat yours anyways. Can you give the mom a heads up and ask if she would want her child eating them? I usually find out when they are having birthday celebrations and I make Ava her own treat that is the same but just allergy friendly. With cross contamination unless you are my BFF or my parents, my kid isn't eating something you made. Just not worth it.

  • We are in NJ, and I have only found it at Whole Foods and Wegmans. Maybe call a natural food store and see if they carry it?

I totally get where you are coming from, I would definitely ask her before buying anything.  I just would love an idea so I can offer, I know how hard it is when you have a kid with allergies as my niece has a severe peanut allergy and a few of my friend's kids have other allergies.

  • We are the same way.  We bring our own treats or have our own treat stash for the teachers.  Unless you are close family, close friends or my mom/inlaws, we probably wouldn't just to be safe.  We do the Fiengold diet which eleminates artificial flavors/colors and preservatives.

  • Rice Krispie Treats

    2 1/2 Tbsp canola oil
1 pkg mini marshmallows (kraft jet puffed)
    6 cups rice krispie cereal

Heat oil in a large pot. After a few minutes, add marshmallows. Stir until the marshmallows melt completely. Turn off stove heat and stir in cereal. Stir to completely combine. Pour into a greased 9 x 13 " pan and press down. Cool and then cut up in to squares and serve.

This is the recipe I use for ds (egg, milk, dairy, soy, peanut allergic). I greased the pan with a tiny bit of oil. You can also line it with wax paper to keep it from sticking. These rice krispies tasted exactly the same as the original recipe, just a little bit lighter in color due to no butter. Good luck!

ITA.  I would much rather appreciate just knowing that there will be treats there that day so that I can be sure to send in something safe.

Other options:  fruit kabob or pops or favor bags with no food in them

  • That is really nice of you to make special treats for his friends and of your son to be aware and concerned!   I know for me personally, my DD is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts and unless I know the person really well, I prefer to send DD w/her own special snack that day.  Her teacher has been great about letting me know the day before.  The other possibility is to check w/the mom and see if there's packaged product you could send.  I have had DD's friends mothers send an unopened package of something so the label can be checked first.

Have you by chance posted this on the Food Allergy board?  There are a lot of helpful moms over there who are knowledgeable of a lot of food allergies and what would be good.

Thanks.  I will tell the Mom ahead of time and offer, I totally understand if she says no thanks but I know if it was me I would appreciate that someone thought of him when planning.  Oh, and DS really wanted Rice Krispie treats because he knows the vegan friend can eat them, he thinks she is allergic to some stuff, I will likely see that Mom first and if she will not allow it them DS will probably want something different b/c she is his BFF at school and it is uber important to him to find something she can eat.  It is really cute though because I knew what every kid in his class could not eat b/c of DS telling me, he really is concerned.  You know what, tomorrow I will try to sell him on fruit.

  • This is why we aren't allowed to bring homemade items in to school anymore (and DD is the only allergy kid in the class so i'm obviously not hating... lol) In her class, if she cannot have what they are offering for snack, they keep a few backup items that they know are safe for her to have....

I have no suggestions, sorry!  It is only 3 ingredients though, shouldn't be too hard to read labels I guess.
