Night terrors

DS has had night terrors since he was 2 years old. He has probably only had a total of 6 or 7. when he has them he screams nonstop and thrashes around. It is almost impossible to wake him from them. I don't know how to comfort him or how to get him to wake up. Any suggestions? Anyone else's LO suffer from these?

Re: Night terrors

  • I've always heard you should not wake them up.  Two of my three have them and it's best to just let them run their course.  I sit in their room and wait for them to "see" me.  That's when I know they are awake.  A quick kiss and they are back to sleep again.

  • DD had them from 1 to 3 1/2.  They started getting less and less until they finally stopped.

I used to barely say a word and put something musical on.  Either a toy or TV.  the more I tried to get her out of it by talking or touching her, the worse she would get.  If she heard something that she liked, it tended to snap her out of it faster.

    So sorry and good luck.

  • DD has them too and they tend to be worse when she's overly tired or has had a nap.  We actually cut out her nap and the night terrors got much better.  For DD, she speaks in complete jibberish, waves her arms and cries hysterically.  I do try to wake her up because she doesn't settle down otherwise.  Sometimes she just has to go to the bathroom and that solves the problem.  Other times we have to sit in her bed and just cuddle for a while until she settles down.  I usually get her out from under her covers and let her sit in my lap and ask her if she has to go potty.  If that doesn't work, I just sit with her and pat her back.  I also know that they almost always happen an hour after she falls asleep, so sometimes I'll go in her room before an hour and roll her over or something and that sometimes helps.  GL - they're really scary and frustrating!
  • DD used to get them  There wasn't anything to do but wait for her to wake up.  Until she did, I couldn't even hold her because she didn't think I was her mommy!
