reusing infant car seat

So I pulled out the infant car seat from my first son and it expires in December 2012.  It's not like I have had it sitting outside for the past 4.5 years.  Who decided on these expiration dates is beyond me but it is really ticking me off that all of a sudden come January 2013 we will need a new one for a couple of months cause I know with our son it got to heavy too carry the closer he got to one year.

So WWYD? Would you continue to use the seat for Jan-March or buy a new one for 3-4 months?

I did email a friend that had the same stroller to if she still has the seat and to check her expiration date on the infant seat. fingers crossed.

Re: reusing infant car seat

  • There's NO way my son was in an infant seat at 7-8+ months. He got way too heavy. IMO, use it and re-evaluate later. :)

  • My DS was out of his infant seat at 7 months.  We're in the same boat.  Although or infant seat got left in a garage in Phoenix for two summers so I'm inclined to pitch it and get a new one.

Exactly this.  I got one with a higher weight limit this time JUST so I could hopefully get 6 months of use out of it.

Also I would NEVER use a car seat after it's expiration date.  Maybe I'm a minority on this one, but I couldn't stomach taking the chance that if something bad happens I would always blame myself.

  • I agree...use it until Dec 2012 and then switch over to the convertible. Even if your baby is small for it's age, it will be ok in the convertible at that point. You can always keep the carrier with you in the car and just transfer the baby into for errands if your even still using a carrier at that point.

  • I had a similar problem with DS2. He was born in July and my seat expired in December. I kept using it until February/ March when I moved him to the convertable seat. By then he was too heavy to carry in the pumpkin seat. I'd just keep using it. It's your seat and it's only a few extra months. Yes the padding and plastic do break down over time but it's not safe on Dec 31st and then suddenly unsafe on Jan 1st KWIM?

  • We will be having the same problem, ours expires in Nov. I plan on using it until then, there is no way I would buy a new one at this point. We've always moved them to convertibles early anyway since the seats get so heavy to carry.
  • Do they all have a date? If so where is it? I have 2 in storage and if they are still good and it's a girl I can reuse them

  • I just looked it up and it said car seats are good for 6 years and also if you have a Franco you can email them with your model and serial numbers and they will send you options to replace the padding for a fresh new look.

Its not 6 years for ALL of them.  It's 5/6 for plastic and 10 for steel framed.  You really have to check.  And you have to check the manufacture date of the carseat and not just when you bought it.

  • I'd use it! My oldest was out of the infant seat by 7 months but my youngest (who is 13 months) is still in it. Ours expires in June 2013 so right around when this one will turn one so I'll probably just keep them in it until it expires, and move them to the convertible seat then. Carseats are one of those things I don't mess with the guidelines on, I won't buy used and I won't use it past the expiration date. It's just not worth the risk for me.

  • I would use it till expiration date, and then switch to RF convertible seat at that point.
