Trouble TTC

IF Storylines/Poll

I am rewatching an episode of Friends, season 9,  where Chandler and Monica went for fertility testing.  At the time I first saw this episode, I thought nothing of it.  Now, I can appreciate it more.

Some shows have NOT handled IF issues well.  Some have.  What are some shows/movies that you have seen that have an IF storyline?  Good?  Bad?

  • Sex and the city, when Charlotte gets the call that her eggs aren't viable. I cry every time. I thought it was accurate until she got a surprise bfp right after adopting. I gave the eyeroll to that stereotype. I also rewatched the friends episode recently when they suggested donor sperm for low motility and not ivf. I thought it was strange.

This has been bugging me recently as well.  I never understood why they didn't even mention IVF as an option for Monica and Chandler.  Up until that point, I thought they did a good job handling that situation... they showed her using OPKs, doing the crazy we-must-have-sex-now bit, going for testing at the 1-year mark, etc.  Yes

  • Charlotte's storyline on Sex and the City makes me cry. I had to start turning off the re-runs because it was too sad. I know it wasn't completely accurate, but it still breaks my heart.

    Up is another tear-jerker.

And I know this isn't technically IF related, but speaking of Friends... when Phoebe agreed to be a surrogate for her brother and his wife, and she had the IVF done, and then took a pregnancy test, like, ten minutes later and got a BFP... seriously?!?! Where were the two weeks of angst? How annoying.

  • I can't think of any IF examples, but my pet peeve is when tv characters give birth and they're so stereotypical... screaming bloody murder and hating their husbands.  The one that bugged me recently was on Bones... when Angela, who is normally very crunchy, had her baby and was flat on her back, in a hospital, screaming her head off.  Irritating.  They could've made a statement about natural birth or the beauty of birth, but instead they cowered to what American's expect.

    This bugs me too

  • Grey's Anatomy = Bad

They had issues getting pregnant after showing her one miscarriage and they didn't talk about any other options other than adoptions.  I could missing some info because I wasn't paying close attention at the time

    BUT

what bugs me now is that Meredith wants to work in the OB/GYN ward with labor and delivery, and I am sorry but I would think someone who struggled to get pregnant and then adopted only to have the adoption taken away would find working in that field heartbreaking... especially so soon after things unfolded
