Babies: 0 - 3 Months

feeding question

My one week old is now only being bottle fed. He usually goes 3-4 hrs between feedings, but then has times that he wants to eat every hour to hour and a half. He weighed 8lbs 2 oz on Saturday at the doctor and we are currently feeding him 2 oz. The formula box and literature says newborns should get 2-3 oz. Is this a sign he needs 3 oz, or just a normal baby thing?

Re: feeding question

  • Its so hard, because sometimes he does look satisfied and others he looks hungry. I think I will try your suggestion of half an oz more. Thanks!

  • adding a 1/2 an ounce was tough for me because i use powder formula and i don't premix. so i added an ounce at a time. your LO might take more sometimes and only 2 other times. i would offer a little more if you think he'd take a little more. it might also give you some more time between feedings. if he spits it up, you know it was too much. my pedi told me that if my LO would take more and not spit it up, than give it to her.

  • If he finishes the bottle completely then try adding more.  My pedi says there should always be some left so you know when their stomach capacity is growing.

  • We are currently going through this at 2 weeks.  He was eating every 3 hours and now it seems he is hungry every 1.5 to 2 hours...at night he may go 3 hours between one feeding.

Sometimes he will eat 2.5 ounces and others maybe only an ounce and a half.

  • My LO is going through the same thing. Pretty sure it's a growth spurt. He's one week today. Last night he was up every hour and a half wanting to eat. I started doing 2.5 oz instead of two and it seems to have solved the problem.

  • i noticed very quickly when I got home with my LO he went from 2-3 oz. It also depends on their weight. Mine came home at 7lb 15oz.  I would fill your bottle up a lil more than 3 oz to be safe. I think he probably would eat 3 oz.
