Caffine in BM

I know how long it takes alcohol to get out of my system, but what about caffine?  I need to pump in a few but I just had two cups of coffee (finally with caffine!). Anyone know approximately how long it takes caffine to get out of your system?

Re: Caffine in BM

  • I don't know how long it takes, but I drink pop with caffeine in it and DD has never had an issue. My DR said the amount of caffeine that gets in to your milk is a very very small amount. So unless you are drinking like 100 cups a day you should be fine to pump now. The "safe" amount of cafeine is like 300 mg per day while BF. Depending on the brand of coffee a large cup has anywhere between 150-200 mgs. I just googled cafeine amounts and I got a chart with all the different cafeine levels on it.

  • I drink 2 cups of coffee every morning and it has never seemed to bother DD.

  • I believe KellyMom says half a day. I used to drink 1 cup in the morning, and DD was super fussy to the point of no consoling her in the evenings. I was going crazy, and finally realized she's probably sensitive to even that small amount of caffeine I would drink every day. They say it's rare for a baby to sensitive to a small amount, but I guess she's the exception to that rule lol. It's totally worth it to cut it out (even on no sleep!) if you think your LO might be sensitive. We've had smooth, easy evenings ever since, and she naps more and STTN.

  • I EBF and I usually have 2 coffees a day or a couple teas a day.  I never go a single day with a tea or coffee and my DS has never had an issue!!!
