Carseats Help Needed

Good morning,

I'm starting the search for convertible carseats for the babies.  I have a 4 year-old son that rides in a Britax Boulevard.  Are there high saftey rating convertibles that will allow for 3 seats on a row?  My son rides in the middle with a baby on either side.  I know it will be more difficult to get him in the car once there are convertible seats.  I'm hoping we'll be able to get a minivan next year.

 TIA

Re: Carseats Help Needed

  • the combi coccoro will fit 3 across almost any car.

The sunshine radian will fit 3 across in many cars - i have 3 across the back of my minivan.

the sunshine radian is very tall and might not fit rear facing in a regular car, though - but the combi would.

i had one combi that we used when the twins were rear facing still - so we could walk behind it in the minivan to get to the back - but changed to the sunshine when we turned them forward facing at 2yo, b/c they fit so nicely together in the back row.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I am obviously way far away from actually needing convertible seats but my FIL insisted on buying them for us for my shower. We got the Diono Radian RXTs (new version of the Sunshine Radians) because they were highly rated and can fit three across (we're undecided on whether or not we're done having kids and I didn't want to have to buy new seats if we have a third). I don't have any personal experience with using the seats yet... DH just put them in his car last night to see how they worked but we haven't put the kids in them yet.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • The Radians are definitely tall RFing, but nice and slim.  I'd probably want to try one out in my car RFing before buying, if possible (this is hard where I am b/c nobody locally carries them, but amazon has fairly easy returns with amazon Moms.)

The nice thing about the Radians, though, is that they can do a lot of things that a normal seat can't b/c they have a steel frame instead of a plastic one (which makes them super heavy, though.)  For instance, a normal RFing seat can't do more than brush the seat in front of it. The Radian can push up against the driver's/passenger seat.  Also, FFing, the straps can be below their shoulders, so you get a lot more mileage out of the seat.

That said, I definitely like it better FFing than RFing.  Also, my oldest is so tall that he had outgrown all other 5 point harnesses (meaning this was our 3rd convertible seat--$$!)  He'll be able to ride in this for a while still.
