C-sections

Scheduled c-section AND finding out the sex = no big surprise...

Just wondering if any of you are maybe in the same situation. We found out the sex of our son at the 20 week anatomy ultrasound and it was great. No regrets!

Now that I'm pregnant with our second and we know that he/she will be delivered by c-section, I'm kind of feeling like there will be no surprises left if we find out the sex at the anatomy scan this time. We were always planning on finding out, but now I'm not sure.We even have names picked out and we're not keeping them a surprise either.

I keep trying to tell myself that the surprise is in finally meeting our LO, who's eyes he/she will have, hair colour, getting to know his/her personality, etc.

Did having a scheduled c-section guide your decision about finding out the sex of your baby? Please share!

  • We are having a planned c-section this time and it's part of why we are team green.  I already know the day and a time within a very short window. I'd like something to be a suprise this time.

  • I agree with pp, we didn't find out with our second for just that reason. We did find out with our third but that was more of a logistical decision based upon where his room would be.
  • Our decision to go Team Green this time doesn't really have much to do with a repeat section, since Erin's delivery was a repeat c/s, too, but since we know this is our last baby, and we found out with the other three....we decided to wait.

I'm super excited about that moment in the OR to hear the words, "It's a ....!"

  • Yes! We are team green because of the scheduled RCS. 5 more weeks to go and I'm really excited that we didn't find out! Can't wait!!   It's been a little more difficult on DH bc he says he liked knowing better with DD#1.  I never thought I could wait to find out and it's actually been very easy!
  • I knew early on we'd have to have a RCS and we did choose to find out the sex. There were times I questioned that choice while pregnant, but I have no regrets. It was the right decision for us. Especially since there were complications during the birth, DH and I would've been "robbed"of the special surprise at the big moment. Knowing the sex beforehand really helped me bond with the pregnancy as well (which I was having issues with). I personally felt it was very exciting to find out the sex at 18 weeks, but if you feel like waiting, that would be really special too!
  • I didn't know I was having a c/s when I found out the sex at 20 weeks.  I don't think it would have swayed my decision though.  MH and I are really impatient and I think we would have gone crazy for 9 months not knowing!  I give team green people A LOT of credit - I couldn't do it.  I'm also a planner and liked knowing what I needed to buy and how to decorate the nursery.

There is SO much excitement that comes along with the birth.  I know the idea of surprise is wonderful, but even if you do find out the gender early, I think there is enough surprise in the day.  Like you said, you get to see what your LO looks like and his/her personality.   I never regretted finding out the sex and will probably find out with my next child(ren), even with a planned c/s.

Whenever you find out the sex, it is an exciting surprise.  And if you don't want to wait until the birth, maybe you can do a gender reveal cake or party so that it does feel like a special event.

  • We were team green and my son was breech so I had a scheduled c-section as well.  Wouldn't have had it any other way!  The surprise was wonderful!!  Can't even describe how the feeling was to be laying there and hearing a baby cry and wondering is the baby was a he or she?  In my case...it was a beautiful, little baby boy.  :-)

Good luck w/ your decision...if you pick team green, you won't regret it!

  • Planned c/s has definitely helped make it easier to stay team green for me.  I feel like it's enough to know the day and time, I don't want to know the sex too.  It probably doesn't hurt that we were team green with #1, had an unplanned c/s and had a good "reveal" moment in the OR, though.  I think the OBs forgot that I didn't know and I had to ask if #1 was a boy or girl.  The OB had DH announce and it was a great moment for us both.

  • I had a VBAC, but I knew the possibility of a RCS was there, so that played into being Team Green.  We found out the sex with #1 and that was great, but it was nothing compared to the excitement of finding out at birth.  I know people say it's a surprise either way, but the surprise is even better when you wait, imo.

  • I knew DD2 was going to be a repeat c/s and that did not deter me from finding out the sex.  It was still a surprise/incredible moment to see/meet the little girl who had been attacking my cervix for weeks.

I really wanted to find out what we were having this time since we are expecting twins and have decided that they complete our family.  Finding out we were expecting twins was enough of a surprise for me! LOL It will still be a surprise/exciting moment when they are born, even though I've been seeing them via ultrasound every two weeks for about 3 months.  I know that they already have DH's nose and favor DD2, but to really see them/touch them is going to be such a great moment/surprise that I don't see how already knowing the sex will detract from it.

    GL with your decision :o)

  • My first c-section experience is exactly the reason we found out with the last pregnancy and this one.  I had to be knocked out because I started feeling what they were doing once they cut.  And if I hadn't known the sex at the time, it would have been a couple of hours until I knew.
  • I was firmly on Team Green the first time and ended up with a C-section.  They let DH stand up and announce the sex and that was such a great moment.

I planned a repeat section for Number 2 and we chose to find out the sex.  Both babies had the same due date.  So I wanted to know if I would be able to reuse all the clothes we had or if I could get rid of my boy stuff.  I also wanted to be able to prep DS1 and talk about a baby brother or sister.

I guess not finding out the first time was more exciting.   But both births were equally special.  I don't think you can go wrong either way.

  • Team Green here. I knew I'd probably have to have a scheduled c/s so I told DH I didn't want to know. He really did. We knew we were having a boy with our DS, but didn't know when we'd deliver- and since our three birthdays were in the same month it was exciting waiting for the day.

I am loving not knowing, even though I have a feeling it's another boy. But you'll be so excited either way. See how you feel that day at the a/s. I just told my DH it'll be very special for him b/c he'll get to go out to the waiting room and tell everyone, get on FB and tell everyone! It'll be extra exciting for him :) We'll be the ones lying there getting stitched up! So I say the choice is yours.
