Babies: 9 - 12 Months

For those who have done CIO...

What's the longest your LO cried?  We've had a terrible time with sleep with DS, some nights he'll fall asleep nursing and then wake up a couple hours later screaming and then will do it throughout the night randomly.  If he doesn't fall asleep nursing and we lay him down drowsy he'll stand right up freaking out...so tonight we had to bite the bullet and let him CIO.  I laid him down at 7:11 and we've been in there to quietly console a couple of times but finally DH went up this last time and rubbed his back without picking him up and he's finally given it up...it makes me feel so heartless but I don't know what else to do!

Re: For those who have done CIO...

  • The longest he cried was the first night, for 45 minutes. He would only get more upset when we went in at intervals to "soothe" him, so we had to go with full-on CIO. Good luck! I know it's hard.

  • Have you done any research on CIO? It might go easier on you and your LO if you read up on sleep training, come up with a plan, and then stick to it. I would recommend Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child if you're set on doing CIO. I also really like the No Cry Sleep Solution, if you want to exhaust other options first.

  • Our first night she went about an hour and 15 minutes crying off and on. We followed Ferber's method with the comforting intervals but no pick ups. The second night was 17 minutes. Night 3 was 8 minutes. We did it when she was younger though--about 5.5 months. I imagine it would be MUCH harder with an older baby.
