Mirena vs Paraguard

What are you thoughts on either? I'm looking into getting one of them at my appt next month.

With Mirena I like not having a cycle but the dr said there is an increased risk for cysts and spotting.... that is making me lean toward Paraguard.

    Oh no, no, no.....

  • Love my mirena. I got it placed at 8 wks pp, had no cramps, super minimal spotting for a couple days, then nothing. I have had maybe 3 instances in the last 2+ years of spotting that hardly required a panty liner. Best part = no babies.
  • Mirena: lasts 5 years, secretes hormones (progesterone, low dose, systemic but concentrated where it needs to be; all the potential SE of the mini-pill including cysts), decreased flow and shorter periods are a common side effect

Paraguard: lasts 10 years, no hormones; increased flow and longer periods are a common side effect

For me, Mirena was the right answer. I am prone to cysts, but pre-DD my cycles were short (24-28 days) but my periods were long (7-11 days), heavy, and extremely painful. I can handle cysts, which I have not had in the 3 years I've had Mirena, but the possibility of a longer heavier period? Not a f*cking chance. My quality of life was crappy 25%-50% of the time before, I'm not going back to that if I have a choice. However, my body has always responded well to hormonal BC so I wasn't too worried about SE. The right answer really comes down to your personal history.

  • I have a Paragard because I wanted to avoid the hormones.  Periods used to be light, 3 or 4 days long with no real cramps, no big deal.  They're now 7-8 days long, very heavy, and I get mild/moderate cramps.  I wish I'd gone with Mirena.

Yep.  I can never remember who it is exactly.

I never had a bad "reaction" to hormonal BC, with the exception of a lower sex drive.  So Mirena just made sense.  My periods were/are fairly long and painful without BC, so I did *not* want that with BC.  I love Mirena, same as others I rarely get very, very light spotting every few months, with increased CM every month (with no bleeding).  It's super easy and works great for me!

  • Paraguard leads to beautiful little girls.  Just ask lrb. ;)-

I believe she uses Mirena now.

  • LRB aside, I've only seen a few pregnancies in the ER with the IUD's but they were all Paraguard. We did however recently find a Mirena that had gone through the uterine wall and cause a really nasty infection and have to be removed surgically =(. Just want to make you aware that all those risks you sign off on can and do happen.

  • I love the Mirena. The only downside I can think of is I cramp pretty bad during my "cycle" but haven't had any spotting since I had it put in (2 years ago almost). I have a history of cysts but haven't had any more since I had my Mirena in not that is the correlation at all.
  • Another Mirena lover here!  I'll be getting another as soon as I can after Butterbean is born.  When LRB got PG on Paraguard I called my OB hyperventilating and she talked me down.  She added to her "calm down, everything will be fine" speech that clinically Paraguard has less "ooops" pregnancies, but all the "oops" PGs she seen at her practice have been with Paraguard, not Mirena.
  • I was going to get the Paragard because I've had some bad experiences with birth control (including extreme depression on Yasmin), but after talking with the doc he convinced me to get Mirena instead. He said the Paragard basically works by irritating your cervix and it can make your periods heavy and painful. The Mirena does have hormones, but they are low dose and they don't have to circulate through your blood stream the same way regular bc pills do. I had a few weeks of light bleeding after they put it in. I haven't had my period yet, but I'm still breastfeeding so that might be part of it.
