Hi ladies, I need your help.
I've struggled with weight since I was 17. (Now 24) I have no thyroid issues but a VERY hard time with my metabolism. It's very hard for me to lose weight. Right now I'm 5' 3" and I'm in a size 14 at 190 lbs. I know I'm really overweight.
Well now I'm pregnant. I need to exercise and be healthy, but I don't know what's safe to do now that I'm pregnant. I also haven't worked out in months, so I'm out of the habit. Can anyone give me any advice and tips? I really do want to start living much more healthfully....
Re: Overweight and need to exercise but now I'm pregnant
I commend you for making that very important decision to invest in your health. Now that you're pregnant, it is important that you are healthy for you, and also for your baby....your child needs a mama who lives a long, healthy life and teaches him/her how to eat correctly. In today's fast-food society, that's hard to do.
This is a conversation you should have with your physician. Most likely, he/she will put you on a reduced weight gain for your pregnancy and will probably only approve light walking during the pregnancy. Usually, the rule of thumb is that if you were active before getting pregnant, you can be active during pregnancy...however once pregnant, it's not usually best to start a kick-your-butt get-in-shape program.
For food - eat clean, healthy foods. Avoid fast food at ALL costs. Great choices are fruits, nuts, veggies, whole grains, lean meats, beans, and nuts. You may ask your doctor for a good nutritionist that can assist you in eating healthy during your pregnancy and after. Once you've been cleared to exercise, it might be a good idea for you to get a personal trainer. They provide structure and accountability to your workout regimen.
I wish you the absolute best in your health/fitness journey. May you live a long, healthy life.
Eat as clean as possible but don't food restrict (I don't believe in dieting or calorie counting) and WALK, WALK, WALK!
Good luck!!
You need to hook up with an endocrinologist who specializes in weight issues, but also, it's possible that you do have thyroid issues only on the borderline (you can still have symptoms even if your level is only slightly off). There are a lot of other things besides thyroid that weight can be a symptom of as well such as vitamin deficiencies (to the point of needing a prescription not just OTC vitamins), auto-immune problems, and I don't want to be alarmist, but diabetes is one thing you should get screened for and possibly before the 28 week mark..
Get back to the gym and listen to your body for what you can/can't do. Don't try to do a b to the w workout but get on the treadmill and hike for a while... Go in the free-weights room and start lifting (if it's lighter than a yo baby it's not doing squat for you!)...
