Considering Lipo...any experience?

Has anyone had experience w/ Lipo? I'm considering abdominal lipo the new Slimlipo v the traditional (old school) lipo. I met w/ a board certified plastic surgeon yesterday for a consultation, rec'd a quote and basic knowledge. I have always had a small belly even at 5'6" 115 lbs.  My recent blood work showed elevated levels of the cortisol hormone that tends to stick to the belly area. After 30+ yrs of diet, exercise, trainers and 2 kids I'm confident the pooch will not go away w/o medical intervention.

Re: Considering Lipo...any experience?

  • You may want to post this over on the Nest's Health and Fitness board. I know there is at least one person over there that has had it done with not so great initial results. I think she's had to have a few follow up corrective surgeries. I don't know anything about lipo so I'm not sure which method she used.

  • I don't have any experience to share but what about a tummy tuck? Would this not be a better route? From everyone I have talked to it seems that the more positive experiences have been from tummy tucks.

  • i've read that 2 years later the weight comes back. psychologically, our bodies have a set weight and that is why perminant weight loss is so hard.

This isn't really true. Your body wants to stay at a steady weight. This is why it can be difficult to start losing weight, and to keep it off. You need to maintain a new weight for over a year for your body to 'reset' and be ok with the new weight as your 'steady' weight. That of course is a brief summary of physiology in lamen's terms.

As for Liposuction, your fat cells are put together in a way so that it looks normal from the outside. When you do Lipo, you are removing these cells randomly, and while you don't gain any weight, it will all look normal. However if you ever gain any weight, your belly will look horribly disfigured, because of the injury to how your fat cells are naturally designted. You will have to continually get lipo in order to maintain a normal looking stomach. So basically, you can get it, but don't ever gain any weight.

This.....I have had several friends who have had lipo in their stomach/flank area. One has strange fat pockets on the back of her arms after gaining some weight. Their stomachs look nice and flat in clothes but are a strange and lumpy in a bikini.

  • I'd look into a tummy tuck and compare the two before making a decision.

  • I'm all for plastic surgery (I've had a breast reduction) but I would NEVER get lipo.  Everyone that I know that's had it hates the results.  Tummy tuck results are pretty incredible if done by a great surgeon.

  • I had Laser Lipo on my saddle bag area and love it!  I would definitely consider lipo before a tummy tuck.  You would have a huge scar with a tummy tuck!  If you work out and have a healthy diet you shouldn't be gaining weight anyway in any wierd area like PP's have said.  The Laser Lipo also will tighten the skin.  I have seen with some lipo on the abdomen it can feel bumpy at first but look into treatments like Endermologie or Velashape to smooth it out soon after the surgery.  Most doctors recommend this anyway.

  • I think slimlipo is the same as smart lipo (new school lipo), where there is an ultrasonic tecnique and a fiber optic lazer to vaporize fat cells. My sisters former MIL had traditional liposuction done but gained all the weight back. What a waste.
  • I have considered cosmetic procedures but figure I'm not done having children yet so my best bet is to leave things alone at this point in time.
