Baby Names

Ronan/Ronen

DH is pulling a late term switcheroo on me.  The name, a Hebrew name of Hebrew Celtic origin, is unfamiliar to my ears, not to his...there are two spellings, I don't think he has a preference as they both are pretty much pronounced the same (ROWNahN).  Spelled with an "a" it's Celtic for "little seal" and with an "e" it's Hebrew for "joy of the Lord".  DH likes both meanings....he has a thing about the sea...so seal there works...but the last two years have been absolutely devastating for us and the conception of this child was nearly 20 years in the making and waiting department (I'm 42), so he sees meaning in the "joy of the Lord" too.

It'd be for a middle name.

First name has not been made official but it looks like it will be Jonah.

Re: Ronan/Ronen

  • I absolutely adore the name, spelled as Ronan. I know a little boy (3ish) who has the name.  I have to say, though, while I LOVE Jonah too, I'm not sure it all flows to my ears. There's a lot of n's going on.. almost too many or something?  But, I do love the name.

  • Congratulations.  Based on the meanings, I prefer Ronen.  However, I think I prefer the spelling of Ronan.

    This.

But I agree with the PP that Jonah Ronan/Ronen doesn't flow very well. STILL, it's not that often that both his fn and mn will be said together so if the meaning has important significance for you, I would stick with them.

LOL, I *know*...that's the pickle I'm in...he adores them both...together...I told him it reminds me of the Banana Fana fo Fana song, the rolling chorus of the Rawhide song and the whole Bob Loblaw Blog jokes from Arrested Development.  He refuses to hear it.  The only saving grace is our last name has no similar sounds.

  • For me, the top priority of a middle name is that it have a special meaning.  It isn't really used very often, so if it sounds bad with the first name that doesn't feel like such a problem.  Also, I would go with whichever spelling is closer to your heritage.  If you are Jewish, I would do Ronen.

My DH really wanted Jonah but we ended up with Judah.  I think Judah Ronen/an sounds better than Jonah Ronen/an, so if you are worried about how it sounds, Judah as a fn might be a solution.

  • I've never heard of it before, but I like Ronan! It sounds great. I love when someone asks about a name and then it pops in my head for a future LO.

  • I truthfully do not like it but I do love the meaning and think it'd work great for a mn!

  • What many people don't realize is that Ronin spelled with an I is Japanese term for a (usually) disgraced samurai, who has been dismissed by his master and set to wandering the land without the option of hari kiri (ritualistic suicide) b/c whatever damiyo he served believed that he has performed a crime to disgraceful to be allowed the relief of death.

Just thought this was something you might want to think about, considering its pronounced the same way as Ronan/Ronen and there's only a one-letter difference.

  • Being Irish I'm unreasonably biased toward spelling it Ronan.

Don't worry about the Ronin association; the people who are educated enough to make that association should hopefully also be educated enough to know better than to worry about it.

I'm a huge Akira Kurosawa fan, so Ronin was what I "heard" when DH first brought his name choice up.  I said, "You mean, like the samurai?"  That was the only familiarity I had (and I have a wee bit o' Irish ancestry...apparently not enough, LOL).  But you are right...not a lot of people know the term.
