shouldn't they be sleeping more than 3 hour stretches at night? We had our check up today and I was shocked the girls weighed 12 lbs 5 oz and 12 lbs 4 oz. They eat 3 hours pretty much round the clock. We had a couple of nights where they went one 5 hour stretch but now the most we get is one 4 hour stretch and that's not every night.
I thought at 11-12 lbs they were capable of skipping one nightime feeding. What would you do to encourage it? Should I just try not offering food when they wake?
Re: 2mos old and 12 lbs...
How big are their bottles?
Do you do a bedtime routine?
4 Fresh IVF cycles + 1 FET where embies didn't survive the thaw = 2 perfect little men!
sFET 11/9/11 - Beta 11/18 BFP!
how well do they nap during the day? IMO, sleep begets sleep (it's most people's opinion, actually, lol)... so if they aern't napping well- they likely won't sleep well at night.
Right at 8weeks is when all 3 of my boys started STTN... around 5w we started to stretch out the feedings as long as we could- by giving a paci when they first started to make noises, etc... often when they wake it's not b/c they are hungry- but just how their sleep cycles go- and a little paci or patting the belly can get them back to sleep - even if just for 20 more minutes - it will stretch out that time and get their bodies used to not eating every 3 hours... but slowly go to 4... then 5... then 6, etc.
it's not about their weight- it's just about what they are used to... and how you respond to every noise- remember that they aren't all about hunger.
Thanks for the input. The girls nap pretty well. We do the eat play sleep routine and it's pretty clear when they get tired. I put them down just before they are completely asleep.
I generally offer them 4 oz bottles and if they are still fussy I make an additional 2 oz. We've tried making their 11-12 p.m. feeding bottles 6 oz and sometimes they'll drink it all, sometimes not.
Generally they are happy babies and if they fuss they are hungry or tired. They are fussier from 5 to 8 p.m ish and we go back and forth between cluster feeding or trying to stick to the schedule - I honestly can't decide what works better. They go down for the night anytime between 7:30 and 9 p.m. and they wake for good for the day about 7 ish.
How far were you when they were born? I found that even my babies, born at 37/1, were a little slower to STTN because they were just a tiny bit early. We dropped that middle of the night feed at 11w, which is basically 8w adjusted.
The PP have great suggestions about trying to stretch them a bit and, hopefully they'll drop that feed for you soon. It's heaven if you can get sleep from even 11p to 6a.
