Medicine for colds

Have any of you had a cold during your pregnancy? Did your doctor tell you any specific over the counter medicines that were safe during pregnancy? I'm on day 7 of this cold and I am struggling. TIA

Re: Medicine for colds

  • My seven day cold turned into a definitely needing an antibiotic because it was in my chest and I had a bad cough.

My dr said I could take OTC robitussin ( the plain kind)...Id call your doctor to get a list of stuff you can take for your symptoms.

    Hope you feel better soon!!!

  • Pharmacist told me I could take Tylenol to ease the sore throat pain (or gargle salt water).  Honestly, drinking hot lemon water worked better than anything for the throat.  Also, he said Dristan was ok to use but not too often (I only used it when I needed to catch up on sleep which was once every 3-4 days).  I didn't have a cough though, so can't help ya there. Neti Pot or saline mist works ok for nasal congestion.  I had to prop myself up with 8 pillows just so I could breathe, it helped though.  Benadryl might also work and he said that was alright to take.  I'd ask your doctor or a pharmacist for recommendations.

ETA: If you can get to a drug store and ask a pharmacist, they can look it up which class it is in their huge bible.    Get better soon!!

  • My dr told me Tylenol Cold/Flu is fine, which I took and it helped. They also told me Halls are fine for a cough, but didn't recommend I take any cough syrup.

  • I'm right there with you!

I've taken Tylenol Cold (kind've helped, but not enough), and Sudafed (worked pretty amazingly, I can breathe, but it didn't rid me of the sore throat, and congestion isn't entirely gone when I lay down)... Cough drops sadly haven't done much for me since my cold came full force, but were good when it was in the early stages.

I'd say definitely try some Sudafed (and all of the above should be safe)... I'm hoping I miraculously am better before this Sudafed wears off in the morning, because I don't have any Sudafed at home, only Tylenol Cold, which is clearly inadequate in comparison.

  • I just got over one.  I drank so much OJ that I thought my pee was going to be orange.

If you are on day 7 and it is still really bad, you may want to see if you can get into the Dr on Friday or a clinic.  You may actually have a sinus infection...

This. If it is longer than 5 days, it is bacterial not viral, which means you need antibiotics. Ask your doc for something prescription. I had a UTI at the very beginning of my pregnancy and needed anibiotics so there are def safe ones.
