BF/EP to FF. Weaning?

So I am in the process of weaning to go to formula for many different reasons. I am down to pumping once a day(just before bed) and I am experiencing quite a bit of pain here. My breasts feel hard all the time(clogged ducts?) and are sore to the touch. I dont know if I should have a long session with my pump to massage everything out or if i should leave it or what really to do at this point. As I write this I have a little ice pack sitting in my sports bra. Any suggestions?

  • I have heard that putting cabbage leaves in your bra helps a lot when you decide to wean. It apparently decreases your supply and gives you some relief. Might be worth a try.

  • Might be TMI, but when I decided to stop, I had clogged ducts like crazy that couldn't be pumped out. So I got into the shower with my husband and let him massage the milk out. It took about half an hour, but them my breasts were soft and comfortable again. Because I wanted to wean, I immediately put on a tight sports bra so they couldn't fill with milk again, had a glass of wine, and passed out. I didn't have any problems after that. Good luck!

  • When I weaned I first went to just 3 sessions a day, morning noon and bedtime.  Then I cut it to two (morning and bedtime), and finally to one(bedtime).  That way I was never completely uncomfortable.  Also I think it helped that after I cut that last session out I got a sinus infection and since I was no longer BFing I took a decongestant.  If you don't have a problem with it maybe a sudafed would help?

  • When I weaned DS at 4 weeks old, I tried to quit cold turkey.  That didn't work out so well....  I had clogged ducts and excruciating pain.  I put cold cabbage leaves in my bra, and that helped with the pain, but didn't make my milk dry up.

I scoured the internet looking for a miracle.  And I found it!  This tea saved me:  https://www.amazon.com/Earth-Mama-Angel-Baby-More/dp/B001MK2P0U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1322098422&sr=8-2 .

I drank 3 cups a day for about 3-4 days, and my milk dried up completely.  My sister is due with her baby in December, and she already knows she wants to quit breastfeeding when her 3 month maternity leave is up, so I gave her my extra tea bags so that she doesn't have to go through the same pain I did.

  • Thanks ladies! I thought I was doing great with weaning until these past few days. I just broke down and pumped the crap out of my boobs because it hurt too much to hold LO against me. Im going out to buy some cabbage(thought I would give it a whirl) and that tea sounds like a great suggestion.
