Pea-Kay (or anyone else) can you please save me the genetic test $$?

I know tomorrow the debate will be reopened as to if my girls are ID or Frat when our out of town family arrives for Thanksgiving. DH and I both think they're frat, as we know they were Di-Di and are IVF twins on a 5dt. But nearly all of our family swears they're identical. What do you think? I'm going to give you pics at several ages.

  • I think they're definitely fraternal. Not just because they look like they are (they have different eyes and noses, and maybe ears, based on what i can see in these pictures) but also, I think that with a 5dt, they'd have to be mo/di IDs if they were ID. i think the embryo would have split before the 5th day in order to be di/di IDs, but I could be wrong about that.

I think your family just needs to get better at knowing which cutie is which!

  • did you do ICSI? just curious... i know a lot of ICSI twins that are ID.

I'd say they are fraternal... out of all the times people have asked- I see more differences in your girls than in other people's kids.

they do look VERY similar- and if they are running around I can understand family having a hard time telling them apart - esp if dressed the same. but in the pics I'd say Fraternal.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

From the research I've done on mono/di, that's correct, assuming everything was kosher from the get-go (I know nothing about transfers, etc.).  Not the best source but the quickest: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin#Degree_of_separation

  • Also, my sister and I, at 14mos apart, would pretend to be twins, and people believed us, so looks aren't everything!!

  • Thanks! We did do ICSI, but the girls have so many differences for me to believe they're ID. I think their faces are different shapes, Jules has curly hair and Kits is straight, etc. We don't typically dress them alike (usually just for professional pics, which is most of what I have access to at work). Maybe I'll lie to the family, tell them that we did the test, and they're frat. :D

That's hilarious, my sister and I who are 13 months a part use to try and pull that off also, we often dressed alike too when we were younger- we did have a few people ask us if we were twins. lol

ooh, thanks for that link! so according to that, by the 5th day, any split would result in mo/di twins. (unless they split before they were transferred, but i don't know if that happens.)

now it makes me wonder, WHAT was i doing on days 4-8 that made the embryo split twice?

Hahahaha this is totally TMI, but around the time of conception and then, consequently (apparently), a split, my husb and I were having LOTS of sex.  Like -- loads and loads of sex.

I also drank a lot of beer (not like, I was drunk the whole time, but for the first time in a long time I had a drink a night for about a week).

So we figure one or both had something to do with it, lol.

definitely not the case here. in fact, i was starting to get a cold right when we concieved, so i was definitely  not in the mood after that. i remember thinking we had timed things all wrong, so it'd be fine to take tons of cold meds. ooh, wonder if that was it... ;)

  • I'm thinking fraternal, too. They look more similar than a lot of frats I've known (like my boys or Goldie's boys ;)) and it's a little tough since those aren't close-ups but the IVF details sure make a good case for fraternal!

Should we add this to the list when people come on here asking "how to get" multiples?  But I am afraid they will listen to us...

To the OP: I agree with others that I think they look fraternal.  My boys look nothing alike but my extended family will ask who is who...I think to them all toddlers look alike.

  • We had di/di twins on a 6 day transfer, and it was impossible for them to be ID. The split would happen on day 2 or 3, and I joked that I assume someone in the lab would have noticed if we suddenly had an extra blast floating around in there. Your girls are definitely fraternal!

My sister and I are 6 years apart and we always get asked if we're twins. When we tell people that we're 6 years apart, they can't tell who is older... it used to annoy me but now I guess it's a compliment?
