  • I had the Merena before getting pg with DD#1. Insertion was super easy, had a period a few weeks later and then didnt have one again until I had it taken out.

I am debating if I should get that again or use the nuva ring again. I *think* we are done, but I keep going back and forth about it. DH and I need to have a serious convo about it in a few months.

  • I really don't like the thought of hormonal birth control so I got Paraguard.
  • Honestly, I wouldn't get Paraguard just based on the fact that it does nothing to prevent ovulation. This means in theory you could be fertilizing an egg every month but not letting it implant. This may not have bothered me a few years ago but after having kids I'm not cool with that.

This did bother me at first but I have to weigh it against hormonal birth control which destroys my cycles and could make it difficult to have another baby. I discussed it with MH and it doesn't bother him, which actually really surprised me. The first day I had it put in I was kind of upset about it, but the copper also kills sperm so it's likely the egg would never be fertilized to begin with. It's main function is actually to kill the sperm from what I have found.

How is your experience n it? AF longer/heavier?

  • I had Paraguard before I got pregnant with DD and I had a really good experience. It did make AF heavier for the first few months, but after that I went back to having the same periods as before. I am getting another one bc we know we don't want to try for another kid for at least 2+ years. I really liked that Paraguard didn't have any hormones. Some of my friends have Mirena though and have a good experience with that as well. I am wondering how it will affect my cycle this time around, since last time I had Paraguard I hadn't had anything in my uterus before. Now I've had the IUD before, as well as a child so maybe it is different?

I haven't gotten a period yet but they have always been heavy and clotty so thats not an issue.

this is why paraguard is out for me as well.

  • I can not take the hormones any more :( it puts me at too high risk. So, I will be getting the paraguard.

I was waffling back and forth for awhile. As much as I would love to go non hormonal...the idea of no periods on the mirena is really tempting. Then I saw the above and it sealed the deal.

  • I had the Paragard before and will get it again. Part of the thought process behind how Paragard works is that it kills sperm and doesn't let the egg implant if the sperm were to make it to the egg. I've had horrible side effects from hormonal BC, so I'll be going back to Paragard for that reason. My period was a bit heavier at first, but it's nothing too crazy. Your period may be heavier than it was on the pill or other hormonal contraceptive but that's because your hormones are not the same on the pill or Mirena as they are without either of them. Mirena has progesterone like the "mini pill" if that helps any.
