Baby Cues and Tummy Troubles

Let me preface to say my next call is to pedi, but I don't think I'm there yet.

I BF.  My LO seems to be having some tummy troubles lately.  He woke up screaming the other day and last night he started screaming again.  I think it's tummy because he seems to be 'pushing' when he's having those fits and calms down after he poops.  I feel bad because it seems to hurt him (but not all the time when he poops).  I bought Colic Calm gripe water to hopefully remedy.  We've done some other gripe water and gas drops.  He's pooping okay.

My question... he sometimes seems to give me cues that he's hungry like sucking on his hand...also when he's having the screaming fits if I put him on my boob he calms down (but pukes afterwards).  Could he may be not hungry?  I tried paci and he always spits it out.  Is it possible I'm getting his cues wrong and he's not hungry and I'm making the problem worse.

(sorry if this doesn't seem to make sense!)

Re: Baby Cues and Tummy Troubles

  • DD chews on her hands, sucks on her fists, etc. when she's trying to poop as well as when she's overtired.  It's the lip smacking that cues me in to the fact that she's hungry (and the time). When they have a tummy ache, they can't distinguish between hunger and pain in the stomach, so they will suck/eat if you give them a boob/bottle even if they aren't hungry.  That's what I have heard, at least. The sucking is calming.

  • if he won't take a pci, try letting him suck on your finger. sometimes that's all dd needs and she's out in a minute!
