Dilation, effacing,... Labor station??

I had my weekly appt yesterday and I am 1 cm dilated, 50% effaced. My doctor also told me I am at a -2 station. I have read many post about dilation and effacing but haven't seen any posts about labor station. Has anyone else's doctors told them what staion you are at??

Re: Dilation, effacing,... Labor station??

  • Nope.  They tell me he's head down, but that's about it.  I'm only a fingertip dilated and 70% effaced.

  • I was -2 and not dilated at all at 35 weeks. I won't be checked again until 38 weeks unless I end up in labour.

  • I am at 0 station (really low) as of yesterday, 75% effaced, and not yet dilated.

  • I was at -1 last week. It just means how engaged the baby's head is, and is another thing I wouldn't read too much into as an "imminent" labor sign- you can go into labor without the head being engaged at all.

  • Last week (38 weeks), I was 2 cm dialated, 90% effaced, and baby was +1 station. The week before, I was at a 0 station. The way the doctor explained it to me, station has to do with the position of the baby in your pelvis. 0 is considered "engaged", and it can span anywhere from -5 (still really high) to +5 (baby's head is crowning).

Will baby #3 be another girl?

  • At my appointment yesterday, LO's head is still floating as they say, even though I am 4cm and 80% effaced. This is our 2nd baby though, and my midwife said it's very common for 2nd babies to not drop until labor starts.

Being at -2 station though is good; it just means that baby is nice and engaged!

  • at my appt yesterday I was 40% effaced, 2 cm and -3 station
  • Yes I am at 0 station, 60% effaced, and 2 cm dilated (normal for second time Moms).

Yesterday my midwife said that my effacement meant I wasn't quite ready for baby yet, but when I mentioned I had a feeling I'd have a fast birth she said "well your last labor you were at -2 station the day you went into labor, and you are already at a 0 now, so it will probably go faster this time"

This is because the baby has a little less far to travel down when it starts coming out.

  • My doctor told me the head is down, 80% effaced and 1cm dilated and my cervix is way back.  This is were I was at my last appt which was last Friday.
  • This is covered in this birth video I have (Sheri Bayles laugh & learn about childbirth). I rec it to everyone over the hospital class, b/c its much more informative.

-4 is still floating. 0 is really when they say baby is "engaged". +4 is when the baby is crowning and that is a very short station because once the head out the babys body comes out very easily.

Most second/third times moms babies float till the end. First time moms usually "drop" a couple weeks before having their babies (at the latest).

  • We just got back from our appt and I was told I was 1-2 cm dilated. I asked about effaced and she didnt give me a percent she said the baby was about a 2....im pretty sure she said 2 not -2.
