Babies on the Brain

s/o working holidays

I am stunned by the amount of older adults working at the malls lately.  I am use to seeing a few over 30 working retail.  When we went the other day it  was more adults closer to my mom's age or older standing behind registers than college kids and teens.  It was shocking.  I think it shows the true economy.  People are taking anything they can get at this point. I have noticed older wait staff at restaurants too.

Re: s/o working holidays

  • It's crazy, and sad.

And if I hear one more teenager biitching about how the "old people" are taking their jobs, I'm going to flip on someone.  I mean really, I'm so sorry that your mom told you that you could only go to spring break with your friends if you paid for it yourself... some people have to work to keep a roof over their family's heads.  But yes, let's just give you the job instead since it's traditionally a teenager's job, and they're poaching your mall territory.  ::eyeroll::

  • My mom is 57 and just got back into the work force after a lengthy illness. She works in retail too and she says most of her co-workers are her age with a few young kids working after school jobs.

I do feel bad for the kids who get jobs a teenagers to save for college.  I got a job at 15 so I could pay cash for as much of my college as possible.  While it is more important for families to have roofs over their head, it still sucks for the kids who will have no money saved up for college.

This is true, and if that was what the kids I've seen complaining were biitching about, I would more than understand that.  Everything I've seen so far has been that they're mad for not having extra spending money, and mommy won't let them have an iphone unless they can pay the data plan, or they can't buy the new shirt they saw at Express or whatever.  It's probably just that the kids I see posting this on FB are friends of my cousin, and for some reason she seems to hang around with a lot of very entitled people, even though she's not really like that.  I don't get it.

yeah, I have no pity for them then.  I'm 30 and I still don't have an iphone.

We always have our kids 16 and older go out and get jobs so they can save money for emancipation. Now only a select few go out and hunt for a job, and from that only a few truly save for emancipation. It's been hard b/c the kids out looking have been looking for months with nothing. I have a kid that walks to the McDonalds the road from his foster home several times a week to see if anything is available yet. I am hoping his determination pays off. In the mean time he just works odd jobs and tries to save that way.  One of my girls had to quit her job (she is emancipated now) but she was barely getting any hours b/c they trying to "spread out the hours", but figured out she wasn't getting hours b/c they were giving them to older people. She was unable to pay her bills and scrambled to find something else.

  • My husband works retail- but it's not because he settled, or got laid off anywhere, or was desperate or anything :) He actually enjoys it. He works for a major drugstore, as a manager. He's had the job for awhile, out of his choice.  He has Thanksgiving off, along with Christmas (but doesn't always).   He has a mix in his store- some teens/early 20's and some in their 30's, some 40's.. even 60's <~ but he's been there forEVER.

But, I completely get your point and totally agree with you.

I think it's safe to say that the number of teenagers who get jobs to save towards college and emancipation are greatly outweighed by those who get jobs to have money just for the sake of having money.

    That is very very true.
