Question for moms with boys

Sorry for posting on this board since I pregnant and don't have a preschooler yet, but I just wanted to ask this of moms with older boys.

We are expecting a boy and are trying to decide on circumcision.  I have heard sometimes boys have problems with their circumcisions later.  How did your son's circumcision turn out?  Did anyone have any complciations?  Did anyone have any other problems?  Anyone regret their decision?

 Thanks in advance.

Re: Question for moms with boys

  • We had no issues. We were very torn on the decision because he'd been I the NICU and his body had already been through a lot. Our doctors assured us it was fine and it  turned out to be. I do know people from here (no one from real life) who have had issues with it adhering again and have had to have another circ.

  • Three boys, and one complication.  My middle son needed to be recir'ed.   Not a big deal. It was done when he was 27 months old & already potty trained.  It took a day for him to start running around crazy again - but he never stopped using the potty.  We enjoyed the peace for about 24 hours ; )

Obviously, we had it done again with our youngest & no issues. But, we have been through much tougher surgeries than the circ with one of our boys.

  • We did, and it was fine.  My dh is is not, and he was very adamant about my son being cs....I did not have strong feelings either way...

  • DS had an adhesion (when it reattaches) at 3 months b/c no one told us what to watch for and to keep putting vaseline on it once a day.  Other than that, there were no major problems.

ETA:  His was minor and didn't require surgery.

  • No problems here.  I left the decision to MH since I had no strong opinions.

  • We got DS circ'd.  I felt strongly about getting it done, DH didn't care either way.  We had no problems, DH is happy we did it now, no regrets here.  It's a very personal decision to make...

  • Three circs here - no problems.  Our pedi has commented on what a good job the doc did on all of them.  Smile

Interesting.  So what exactly is a "good job" for a circ?  It seems like doctors vary in skill, so I am just wondering what would be a "good job"

I would Google and see what you come up with.  I know I opened the door on this one but I'm not going to describe the doctor's actual work on a public message board, KWIM?

I understand different states do this different ways.  In our state, the OB's perform the circs.  In others it's the pedis in the hospital.  I would find out who will do it and ask how much experience they have.

I am sure all will be well.  Good luck!

Yes, I do know what you mean.  I certainly was not looking for a graphic description on a public board (that would just be weird).  Really, I was just looking to know what would be an example of a "good circ" as opposed to a bad one.

So what exactly makes for a "good" result?

  • No issues with DS' circ at all.  His was done in the hospital by the pedi in a room just off the nursery on the recovery floor.  DH and I went with him to comfort him during the procedure, and if we have another boy, I'd do it that way again in a heartbeat.  I'm so glad that we didn't leave him alone.  It wasn't a big deal (not gory or bloody), but I felt that it made him less upset to have us there with him.  They are so in tune with Momma's smell and sound even at a day or so old.

An example would be my middle son.  His just did not look right (uneven) & he had a bridge (so it was necessary to recirc).  A different doctor circ'ed each of my boys.  And my nephew also had his reattach - but did not need a surgery (same doctor as my middle son).  But really, not a big deal.

  • DS was circumcised, and he it turned out great, he did not have any complications or problems.

  • I think it has something to do with keeping enough of the "ridge" intact to save most of the sensory aspect but not too much so that it re-adheres.

  • 2 boys here and we did not circ either one.  No problems.  My DH is over 30, not circ'd and has never had one problem either.  IMO, the foreskin is a natural part of the body boys are born with.  There is no reason to get rid of it.  I would suggest reading my friends blog on the issue in my sig.
