Getting back into shape...

is going to be rough.  I've gone for a few walks outside with the stroller, but I just fast-walked on the treadmill and it took a lot out of me.  It's a bit sad to me because I used to be able to run and took spinning classes etc.  I haven't really been able to work out yet, because I wasn't feeling up to it.  I wish I could've been one of those people that just jumped back into working out, but I'm realizing this is going to be difficult. I'm totally not happy with my body, but I understand that it's normal and accept it (to a point which is why I'm trying to work out).  Anyone else struggling to get back into things?

Re: Getting back into shape...

  • I hear you!  I was able to start running again 4 weeks after she was born, but man was it HARD.  And I ran up until I was 39 weeks!  I swear it was easier to run while I was pregnant than it is to run after taking 5 weeks off.  I am still doing a lot of walking breaks and I am pretty sore the next day.

I like to tell myself that it is so much harder because of the sleep deprivation right now.

Don't worry - we will get it back.  We just need to give it some time. I have friends who have run their best marathons and done their best triathalons after having kids.  But they didn't bounce right back either - it just took time.

  • Yes! I tried to take a walk the other day, nothing too intense, and came home with my crotch on fire. I really hope things continue to heal and get back to normal over the next two weeks, because my plan was always to get back to the gym after I'm cleared at 6 weeks, but I'm beginning to realize I've got a loooong road ahead of me. I guess that's why they always say 9 months on, 9 months off...

  • Don't worry - it'll come back.  Don't push yourself before your ready, your body will adjust as it's able to and before long it'll feel like you never took any time off at all.

  • Yeah, I was going to start doing exercise DVDs starting today.  I haven't really done anything since like March.  I know it's going to be hard, but I've got 10 lbs. to go still!

  • I am debating going to the gym this weekend. We shall see. I went to the zoo last week and got winded pushing the stroller up hill (and it wasn't a high hill). I really want to get back into shape. We had newborn pictures done and I pretty much hated the way I looked in them. Plus I had to buy the largest size pair of pants I have ever purchased. I know it will take a bit to get back into shape, but I think going to the gym will restore my confidence.

  • I had been walking around the neighborhood with the stroller and getting winded.  I made my first gym trip today, wow it was rough.  I only did half of what I used to do, and was hardly able to keep up.  That and my hips were so sore.

  • I appreciate the support and knowing I'm not the only one.  I guess it just takes time.  I'm still in maternity clothesbecause nothing I tried on seemed to fit me right no matter what the size.

  • I pushed myself to start working out ( and didnt listen to my body as much as I should) but the issue I'm running into is I always liked to work out and do distance runs, ect which meant 60 minutes or so at the gym....now I need my workouts to be like 30 minutes or so because 1) I just don't have as much time to spend and 2) I want that extra 30 minutes to sleep in the morning. My biggest pain has been my ankles--amazingly they didnt swell in pregnancy, but when I started working out again they HURT!  I also notice working out with 2 gallons of milk strapped to your chest is an entirely new sensation... I have been doing 20-25 minutes of HARD cardio and then 1 muscle group (abs/legs/arms) for 10 minutes afterwards 5 days a week. I also bought Jillian Michaels 30-day shred which are 20-minute workouts to do when I cant make it to the gym and for a home DVD it is AMAZING!

Oh, me too.  I have 22 pounds to go, but I actually want to lose around 50.  Yikes.
