Hello Everyone,
I lurk alot. I did an intro back in October when I had my son at 34 weeks. About 2 weeks ago I developed a sore on my right breast which I presumed was from pumping. I know its pretty stupid, but I do not have a GP.The sore turned into a boil and my OB prescribed keflex over the phone (11/16). The infection continued to worsen and redness was spreading so I went to Urgent Care on 11/19. The sore was cultured and I found out today that it is MRSA. The Urgent Care doc gave me a script of Septra which looks like its working.
I have not given the baby any breastmilk from my affected breast since I discovered the sore. I quit giving him milk from the left one on 11/19. I need to ask the pediatrician if he thinks I should continue to pump. So far the other docs have said to pump and dump. Since the wound is on my breast I am afraid I will end up in a cycle of recontamination. The doc also sad that I can get reinfected "at the drop of a hat." I am wondering if its wiser to stop pumping until I get better. Obviously I would rather have a formula-fed baby than a sick baby.
I value all your opinions. I plan to ask the pedi tomorrow. Thanks in advance.
Re: I have MRSA...wwyd?
Sorry, I don't think my question was made clear. If you were in my position, would you continue to pump or call it quits?
i had mrsa when my babies were in the nicu just ab three months old. the babies got it in the hospital, i attempted nursing and because my nipples were dry and damaged the mrsa was transferred. mine started off with mastitis, had a huge lump on my breast, was put on antibiotics which didnt help. i had to be admitted to the hospital and was put on iv antibiotic called vancomayacin sp?. they also had to drain an abcess that formed. i was there for a week and things finally started getting better. i was pumping and dumping all of that time. after i got better i decided to stop because the pain i was in was unbearable and i just couldnt risk another infection. if i was you i would slowly wean yourself off after the infection is gone but then again it depends on how severe it was. from what i was told ab mrsa it stays in your system forever, therefore nursing your lo might put him at risk.
good luck, let me know if you have any questions
I had a horrible MRSA on my hip back in March.I had gone to a spa that week and must have caught it there. I had to go to the ER twice to have it drained and packed. They had me repacking it several times a day and I was on antibiotics for two weeks. In combination with that I also did sea salt soaks by mxing a teaspoon of sea salt with 6 oz of warm water. then i would put it in a shot glass and hold it on the wound for a minute before drying and repacking it. I also took garlic pills which help fight off bacteria, probiotics(acidophillus) to boost your immune system, and I drank acai berry juice which came highly recommended from other MRSA sufferers to fight the MRSA and keep it from coming back. Its a lot of work but i was better in a week. I recovered very well. I
If I were you I would be very careful even holding your baby. It is extremely contagious, it should always be covered up by tape and gauze. I was told that when you have it until you have fought it off completely your body is contaminated. I would switch to formula, a baby contracting MRSA could easily kill them. I dont mean to scare you but i know how awful it can be, I have a horrible scar on my hip where it ate through parts of my flesh to prove it. You can not be too safe with this. wash your hands constantly and use homeopathic remedies along with antibiotics! I never had it re occur thanks to taking proper care of myself. If you need to talk you can email me, vforvolume@gmail.com Good luck!
