placenta previa? Anyone have it move?

So at my 20 weeks ultrasound my dr said it looked like the placenta was covering the cervix and she said we do another ultrasound at 28 weeks to confirm. I google it and came up with placenta previa- which sounded a little serious. Literally my dr didn't say anything about it just we will "keep an eye on it" and it could change as I get bigger since the uterus is still small at 20 weeks.

So in 10 days I have my ultrasound and I wondering if anyones placenta did move and they no longer had a issue? I'm wondering what the chances are.... Has anyone had any good news? We are going on holidays and then I get my ultrasound the day after we get back, so hopefully nothing happens while we are gone!

Re: placenta previa? Anyone have it move?

  • I'm in the same boat.  Apparently, a low-lying placenta is very very common, and most of the time it DOES move on its own.  I'll have a repeat u/s in Decemeber around 30-32 weeks (it isn't scheduled yet).  My doctor basically said that if it doesn't move, we'll automatically have a c-section, but that most of the time it doesn't come to that.

Hope that can help you rest a little easier and enjoy your holiday!

  • I didn't have this condition myself, but a close friend did. Like you, they noticed it at the 20 week ultrasound. By the time she had her follow up ultrasound it had resolved itself. Just as you mentioned, her uterus grew and the placenta moved with it.

Obviously everybody/pregnancy is different, but just wanted to share a "good news" story!  Good luck!

  • I had a low lying placenta @ my 15 week ultrasound which really scared me,my dr said most of the time it moves on its own & sure enough @ my last ultrasound it had moved.
  • Actually, I just had my follow-up ultrasound this morning and it had moved enough that it will no longer be a problem (yay!).

One of the resources I found had some really nice stats on it:

Complete placenta previa (placenta is actually covering the cervix):  Diagnosed in 5% of pregnancies; 90% of cases resolve

Marginal placenta previa (placenta is barely touching the edge of the cervix): Diagnosed in 45% of pregnancies; 95% of cases resolve

If it doesn't resolve, problems don't tend to happen until closer to the term, so I think the chances are low that anything will happen over Thanksgiving. :)

  • I found out at my appointment on Monday that I have a low-lying placenta. My doctor didn't seem concerned about it. He said that 95% of the time, the problem will correct itself later on. If it doesn't, it might just mean I'll need a c-section since the placenta would be blocking the way out for the baby...

  • Yaaaa!

So many good news stories! I feel much better already :)

  • I had a low lying placenta too and just had my follow-up--it didn't move much, but it moved enough for it not to be off concern anymore.
