Trouble TTC

Do you ladies think I did the right thing?

I had a doctors appointment on Friday with my family doctor.  She is the one who Dx me with PCOS and put me on Metformin.  I have been on Met since July and it has really helped regulate my cycles.  I went in because I needed a refill and because I wanted to ask about more testing just to have the information.  All she did was refill my Met and told me that we should be seeing results soon. (As in a BFP).

I walked out the appointment very disappointed that she wouldn't listen to anything I was asking.  On Monday I called my gynecologist and made an appointment for Dec 16.  I feel as though maybe a second opinion would make me feel more confident with the Dx.

The only thing that my family doctor did was blood work to test for PCOS.  I just feel like I should be getting an u/s and have someone check for cysts.  I have been going back and forth with my decision.  My DH thinks it won't hurt to get a second opinion, but I think he is nervous about more testing.  (ie: and SA)

  • Honestly, if you really have PCOS, you're better off with either a gynecologist or a RE anyway.  I think you are doing the right thing :)

  • Yeah, I would definitely ask for a 2nd opinion. While I don't *think* monitering is needed for met (but please correct me if I am wrong ladies) still, you have been on it for a while, you would think they would do some other tests. I would see a RE.

  • I think you're doing the right thing. A second opinion never does any harm, and if you truly do have PCOS, you need to receive the proper type of care.

  • You did the right thing. If you are TTC, your GYN is more equipped to help you than a family dr, and if you get to a year an RE will be your best bet. You've been trying since, July? 4 months is not much time and it can take a healthy couple up to a year to conceive. Check out the TTGP board. They'll have a lot of intro help for you. Good luck!

ETA- Oops. Ignore me. I didn't read your siggy. LOL

  • If you feel you want another opinon, or someone to just be a little more thorough in yor dx, you are doing the right thing!! My OB said I had PCOS because I had all the symptoms, even some I had not heard were related to PCOS. I went to an RE and then I was able to SEE it for myself. It does help absolutely knowing for sure!!

    Good Luck to you!!

  • I pretty sure that we're going change our regular doctor. My husband is trying to get switched back to his old doctor right now. I'm gonna wait until after I see the ob/gyn before I make any decisions. The guy I see now doesn't care at all. The last time I saw him he all but called me liar and ripped into me for gaining 2 lbs in 5 months. I was not impressed at all!
  • Definitely think you are doing the right thing. Since PCOS is your dx I would see an RE (sounds like you are looking into that from your update further in the post). GL to you!!

  • Thanks!  I feel a lot better now!  Should I tell my gyn that I have not been on any kind of birth control since May 2010?  We weren't actively TTC but we weren't preventing either.  Or should I just use July as my start date?

  • I went to my gyno a month ago for my annual pap smear I told him I was concerned about my periods and that we have been trying to get pregnant for 5 months now, he did a blood test that day and scheduled an ultrasound for the next month. I was diagnosed with pcos yesterday. He put me on some meds and wants to see me in January to make sure I'm ovulating by then. He says he's impatient and wants to see results. My husband and I are so happy with him. I think you need to find someone who cares and is as concerned as you are! Smile
