I'm attempting to actually cook a turkey this year. How hard could it be, right (These will be my famous last words)? It's just me, DH, DS and maybe sSIL may come depending on her work schedule but we'll see. I'm kinda glad that since it's just going to be us then I can mess up and not feel so bad. I do have a back up chicken in the freezer just in case
.
What method do you use? Low temp for longer period of time? Shorter cook time at a higher temperature? Are there any disadvantages or advantages for either way of cooking? Do you brine? Not brine?
Any tips for first time turkey cookers?
Re: How do you cook your turkey? I'm so confused with all the choices!
Two Words - Oven Bags!
I love them and that is what I have been using for the last 9 years. Make sure your turkey is thawed really well and take out the neck/giblets.
Good luck!
Married and it feels so good!
I did my first turkey a few years ago. I used emeril's brining and roasting recipe. I was so worried/stressed about it the first year but it came out so awesome. It sounds a lot harder then it is. I'll post a link to the recipe tomorrow and my tips about the brining.
We are bringing for the first time this year. (It's just a salty herby mix you soak the turkey in) and then we'll roast it. We're doing Alton Brown's recipe.

This is what we've done the last few years. Everyone says its the best turkey they've had.
This is what we are trying this year for the first time!
We do 2. DH fries one in his electric fryer.
I put mine in the oven. I cook it at a higher temp for a small-ish amount of time to "brown" the skin. Then I cook it at a lower temp for 3-4 hours (I think). It depends upon the weight. I also put a pop-up timer in my bird to be sure. You can buy 2-packs at the grocery store.
