Tips needed for photo session with toddlers

We are doing some pictures with our boys in a few days. They will mostly be photos of our boys but would like a few family photos as well. Last time we had photos done they were less than a year and we got some good pictures of the boys, but had a hard time getting them to smile when we were in the pictures with them. We wished we had brought along a family member to make silly faces etc. No matter how hard the photographer tried, he couldn't get them to smile while he was taking pictures.

Anyhow looking for any general advice that you have on how to make a toddler photo session a success.

Also, I'm 23 weeks pregnant and have a little bump, but it's not huge. Right now, in pictures, I feel like it just looks like a fat belly but not a pregnant belly. Would you try to hide it or accentuate it. And any tips on either of those.

  • I don't know how you feel about bribery but I think snacks and treats work very well at inducing smiles.  I also think that the best photos are ones that are not posed or planned.  Bring along a favorite toy or ball and get pictures of them playing and interacting with each other and you.  Also, when you are doing a family shot, try sneaking in a tickle when the photog is taking the picture.  Or, you can let them choose a small item to hold.  My oldest was always happy with a small ball or stuffed animal.  At Christmas time we would always let him hold a little jingle bell and he loved that!

As for the pregnant belly...I say accentuate it!  Wear a cute maternity top that makes it look a little bit bigger.  I think you will be much happier looking pregnant than trying to hide a growing belly.

  • For DD I could usually get a something resembling a smile if I said "show me your teeth!"...then snap the photo real fast

And for DS I would say "show me your squinchy face" and he would do this thing that somewhat resembled a cheesy smile.

Got anything like that that would work for your boys? Bringing a family member is a really good idea, especially if you're gonna do outfit changes

I would try to accentuate the belly, unless you think there is gonna be another photo session in a few months when your belly is more obvious

  • Gah, I'd LOVE to learn how to get them to smile. I can't even get them to look at me while I take a picture. This is the story of my life these days:

As for the tummy, I say rock it!
