Foods

After reading some posts, I feel like DS is one of the few babies that is not eating finger foods yet.  I just read the Thanksgiving food post and I don't think DS could handle turkey or anything solid yet.  I have tried puffs and mum mum's with massive fail.  LoL

Anyone elses LO not eating "solid" finger foods yet??  Any tips on how to get DS to start?

Re: Foods

  • How were puffs a fail? Did he gag or just refuse? Have you tried yogurt melts or bits of soft fruit or veggies?

DD had puffs and melts first and does well with them. The first time I gave her cut up bits of butternut squash, she just mashed it all over her tray. I cut a ripe pear the other day, so it was soft but not too soft, then grinded up some cheerios and rolled the pear in the cheerios to make it easier for her to grab. I do the same with carrots, banana and squash now.

He may not be ready yet, and that's fine! We tried bits of chicken a couple weeks ago and DD gagged horribly. Meat isn't something that melts and they can't mash it in their gums well, so it confused her. We decided to wait a little longer on the meat, but she will try some turkey next week. :)

  • When we did puffs he would make this horrible face and them tongue eject them.  LoL  I tried them again for his breakfast this morning but they kept getting stuck to his hand and I had to put them in this mouth.  This was with a little more success.  I will have to try the melts.  We were going to do soft veggies on Thanksgiving just to give it a try.  Maybe I will try sooner :)

  • DS is nowhere near eating true solids.  He hasn't been a fan of much texture yet. We started with just the Gerber purees and then I tried to make my own baby food, which was obviously thicker and had more chunks in it and he refuses to eat it.  He's had mum mum's and a few puffs but we haven't even tried anything else.  He's just not ready for it, and honestly I'm in no hurry to push him.
  • Nope!  I just posted on the Thanksgiving thread.  DS won't eat any regular solids yet.  I have tried giving him puffs and yogurt melts and he just gags on them or like you said they get stuck to his hands and never make it to his mouth.  OR he throws them on the floor.  :(  I tried chunks of sweet potato but he just smears them and makes a mess.  He will eat purees if I spoon feed him.  The only thing he has sort of eaten is a cracker.  He doesn't really eat it though so much as use his gums to break it into little pieces that he then spits out.  Anytime I've tried to put something into his mouth he gags and pukes.  He does the same with the cracker sometimes.  I keep trying but obviously he is just not ready.

  • DD just started eating puffs and she's nine months. We offered shortly after eight months but she just wasn't ready. One day it just seemed to click and she was chewing everything, even purees and water. I was starting to worry that she was behind after spending time with my friends dd who is about the same age and reading all posts about food.

  • DD likes to mash things with her hands, and sometimes if I hold something to her mouth she'll take a little nibble, but that's it. We keep introducing things just to let her get used to handling the different textures.

  • DS does not even eat purees yet. Trying since 7 weeks, no luck. Sometimes he does take some Banana when DH feeds him. It's a flight and I hate to force him. I don't believe that's how it should be. He also refuses the bottle, no matter if there's bm, formula or water in it. He is exclusively bf but did take the bottle on occasions up to 5 1/2 months without problem. Looks like he does not accept anything else then my breast and occasionally a paci in his mouth. I can't give him bottle nor sippy cup, spoon does not work either. Might it be the teething? How long of trying did it take you until your baby accepted eating solids? Any other advise? Thanks!
