XP: Flat Head Syndrome

Our LO has a very prominent flat spot on one side of her head. I was nervous about this happening to E before she was born so I had read up on ways to prevent it, but nothing I have done seems to have helped... I've always switched the direction she sleeps in in her crib but no matter what she always turns to her favorite side. We do tummy time every day, for at least 30 minutes (broken up). I've resorted to switching the direction she lays on the changing table and the direction of the bath tub.

I'm at a loss though. I don't know how else to reverse the damage already done. I called her pedi and the earliest they have an appt is for when her 2 month check-up is on Dec. 9th. She just said to keep doing what I'm doing but I don't know. I'm really worried that it will be permanent. Is there anything else you ladies know of that I can do to help her? I feel so bad that it happened, especially since I tried from the beginning to prevent it. TIA.

  • Sorry this is happening to your LO! Have you seen or considered the Boppy Noggin Nest? We are using it to try to prevent a flat spot, but from the reviews I readsome people said it helped to correct a flat spot too. Hope she gets better soon!

  • Besides a noggin nest or propping their head a certain way with a receding blanket , not sure.

  • Receiving blanket is what that should read.

  • Thanks! I posted on a 2 other boards and they all said the Noggin Nest too. I will venture out tomorrow to get one. I've tried propping her up with A&A blankets but she seems to squiggle herself down off of them throughout the night. Thanks again!

  • I've seen babies with helmets that correct flat spots.  Worst case, she'd wear one of those.  I saw a baby wearing one at Target the other day.  The cashier was being a total dork, telling her older brother that he had a rock-em-sock-em robot for a sister.  The mom told him what it was for and said they have to wear it for 8 weeks.  I wouldn't worry about it being permanent.

  • DS had a flat spot from birth. We tried everything to correct it but by 9 months it hadn't improved so he had to wear a helmet for a year. It wad only supposed to be for 2 months, but everyone that I have talked to since that had one all had to wear it for 9+ months. I never got any rude comments about it and DS loved it - and still asks for it now and then. Actually, we were at a hockey game with him and everyone thought it was a hockey helmet and loved it.

  • DS could only turn his head to the right when he was born. For him, it turned out his collar bone was broken and by the time we caught it he had been compensating so much he had a problem. I took him to a chiropractor for the head turning issue and they discovered the collar bone but were also able to get his head going left. After the first treatment he was at least turning it that way and after three over the course of the week you couldnt tell he was favoring one side at all. The pedi had told us (after I took him back with a major WTF, how did you not know this was broken) that he would have developmental delays because it would be a long time before he could turn his head that way but the chiropractor fixed him right up. Of you do go this route look for someone who is credentialed to work with babies. Ours is great and she doesn't charge at all for infant adjustments because she thinks they are so important.
