Sleep dust needed!

Okay, I have hit a wall with DD's sleep. I *try* to do Ferber, but because I'm doing it alone, I end up giving up and just nursing her back to sleep. She's 15 months old and the only time I've had a full night's sleep is when I went out of town for 2 nights last June. So, tonight, I'm just letting her cry. Which means that I will wake up 100 times tonight to listen for her and hear phantom crying all night long. ~sigh~

Re: Sleep dust needed!

  • Sleep issues are so hard to deal with, especially when you're on your own :(

Please don't just leave her to cry by herself, especially if you'd been trying to Ferberize and then giving up.  Everything you've done has taught her that you'll come back eventually, I feel like it's unfair to her to just go straight from one side of the spectrum to extinction CIO.

Did you read Ferber's book?  I'm pretty far on the AP side of the spectrum (and never planned on doing CIO ever!), but it worked perfectly for us when I followed it almost to the letter.  I'd check up on her in intervals (I started with only 1min between checks) and only go in long enough to make sure that she was safe and she saw me.  I wouldn't pick her up or even touch her really.  Then I'd leave.  It's still really, really hard but it lets her know that you're still alive out there and she hasn't been abandoned.  I expected it to take hours for her to calm down, but she did it in 45 minutes.

The big thing with us is that once you start you have to just power through!  Every time you give up and rock her back to sleep (or whatever you do) is teaching her that you'll give in eventually and she can rely on those old sleep associations.

  • You're right, Sinafey. I'm doing Ferber starting from day one. You motivated me to look back at the book. I'm just. So. Exhausted.

I'm glad you took my reply the way that it was intended.  I really hope you're able to get some rest :(

  • Lots of luck! Sending lots of sleep dust your way.
  • You can do it!!  We started and stopped Ferber multiple times over DD's first year.  She was a terrible sleeper.  A little after she turned 1, I decided I couldn't take anymore, and we followed the book to a T.  It seriously only took 2 nights.  Granted, the first night was was pure hell, but the second wasn't so bad, and she's slept through the night every single night since (!!).  Hang in there!!  Sending lots of dust your way - exhaustion is no fun.
