holding both babies?

In a post below about what to do when both babies are crying, someone commented about getting use to holding 2 babies. It really made me think, as I very rarely hold both babies (and DH never does!). I tend to hold one while the other is in a swing or RnP or whatever, and then I switch. Am I in the minority? Did you always hold both babies at once or have you done it more or less as they got older?
TTC for 3 years. Finally successful after 5 IUIs and 2 cycles of IVF. Our amazing twins were born 5 weeks early on 8/16/11. Found out April 2012 that our di/di twins are ID.

Re: holding both babies?

  • I rarely hold both of mine at the same time.  Mainly if I'm feeding both at the same time (which I try not to do, I like to give devoted time to them individually when I nurse) or if I'm sitting down and they both need attention and H is busy with our oldest.

  • I have started to hold them both at the same time as they have gotten older. They sure do get heavy though!! ; )

  • I almost never did until they were around 6-7 months old.  When they both started to wrap their legs around my waist and hold on to me was when I was more comfortable with it.
Dx with severe endometriosis. DS#1 conceived with Met and TI. TTC#2 for 2.5 yrs. Dx 2nd IF. 4 clomid cycles, 2 IUIs, Finally IVF#1 w/ICSI worked for us! twins born 35w3d. Unexpected total hysterectomy 6/11. Now on the HRT train.

  • Mine are almost 3 and honestly, it never really worked out well to hold both at the same time (for more than a minute or two, like to carry them from point A to point B) until they were at least 1. (And since then it's been hit or miss. Sometimes they're fine w/it and sometimes they shove each other.) Before that, just with the way they each wanted to be held, it never really worked out well. So if I was trying to soothe both I might do something like wear one and hold the other, or hold one and use my hand or foot to rock the other in his bouncy seat.

  • I hold mine at the same time a lot.  They love to snuggle on me (together) still.  I love it.

Its getting harder now that they're 8 months old (<<<omg), but I definitely still do.  My H is military and gone a lot, also works nights, so I got used to doing a lot by myself out of necessity.

This is how it is for me, too. I didn't like doing it when they were tiny unless someone handed me a baby. Once they got good head control and hold on, I could scoop them both up pretty easily.

  • I rarely held or carried both at once until they became mobile (except for nursing which I did tandem). Then it became a necessity to carry both from room to room together since one could not be safely left behind.
