3rd Trimester

What happened when your membranes were swept?

We are trying to avoid inducing labor. I am 2cm 50%effaced.. We had a false alarm Friday and were sent home.. I have been trying everything as far as walking, sex, spicy food, bouncing and rotating on my birthing ball and nothing since Friday, just minor cramps&contractions.. So today at my appointment my Dr. swept my membranes and said if the baby is ready, I'll be in labor within 24-36 hours...

So, for those who have had their membranes swept, what was your result? What signs led you to believe it worked and you were in labor? Tell me everything you experienced and how long it took for you to go into labor? I'm so EXCITED Big Smile

Thanks Ladies

  • With my first I had my membranes swept about 4:30, went to the mall and walked around for an hour or so. I had regular but not strong contractions all night. Went to bed about 10. Woke up at 1:45 to pee, water broke on the toilet. My contractions were about 5 min apart after that. GL!!!

  • I had mine done twice.  The first time was at 40w3d and it did nothing other than some spotting and mild contractions.  The second time was at 40w6d and I went into labor about 7 hours later.  I had LO about 14 hours after having it done for the 2nd time but I also had 1 shot of pitocin and my water broken.

  • I've had mine swept twice now, once at 39 weeks and again yesterday morning.  Still pregnant and no signs of going into labour anytime soon.  I got nothing happening over here  Sad  Good luck to you.

  • This is a little off subject, but have your tried nipple stimulation? Either manually or with a pump? I've been told by many wise women and medical staff that it helps induce labor in a natural way, with the hopes of avoiding medical induction. I was instructed to use the pump - 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off. Might be worth a try. GL!

  • I had mine swept yesterday afternoon, So it has been just over 24 hours. I have had mild cramping and some contractions. Lots and lots of thick bloody like snot.I mean lots! Also been passing what looks like are blood clots. Sorry for the graphic detail. I have heard it may help with progress if you are already progressing or may even send you into labour within 48 hours or possible a couple days. Since I was 3 cms dilated and I think 100% effaced, she went ahead and did it. We decided to go ahead and do it yesterday and next week if we need to, in order to avoid a medical induction....Other then sex and walking, it is the most natural way of helping your body into labour. Remember, if your body isn't ready tho, it won't do much!

  • I had it done twice with my son (first baby) and was 3cm dilated both times. The first was done a few days before my due date and all it did was cause some spotting and cramping for a few hours afterwards. The second time I was 5 days overdue and still 3cm same as the week before. I went into labour at midnight the next night, so a little over 24hrs later, and he was born the following evening almost exactly 48hrs after the second sweep. I was a full 7 days overdue at that point so I'm not sure if being that overdue or the sweep started labour but either way. Good luck to you!

  • My question is when do they sweep your membranes?  With my first my daughter came on her own. So this would be something new for me
  • Nothing happened and I had it done very week from 37 wks up to 40. I think it really depends on how ready baby and your body is!
