LO not gaining weight...frustrated

After LO was born I was Bfing, and he wasn't gaining weight. We kept working with the lactation consultant at the pedi's office and she said DS was a lazy eater, and until I could get him to gain weight I needed to BF and give him pumped milk, so I did and he started gaining.

I have been giving DS 3 ounces every 3 hours and he was eating that fine. 4 days ago I increased to 4 ounces every 3 hours and he kept spitting up so I went down to 3.5 and he was still spitting up so I went back down to 3 and he stopped spitting up. Well we went to the doc yesterday and he is only gaining 1/2 ounce/day and not an ounce/day as they want him to so she told me to increase the amount I feed him to 3.5 or 4. Well when I do this he spits up! I guess I will keep feeding him 4 but it seems pointless to increase it if he just turns around and spits it up. Any suggestions?

  • We moved up about 1/3 oz and then stayed at that amount for a few days before going up again. We're just now up to 4 oz but my little one started out on very low amounts since she was so little. She does spit up, but is a "happy spitter" and my pedi said that unless they are really vomiting not to worry. Apparently it takes their stomachs awhile to stretch to accommodate larger amounts. We also keep her propped up for at least 15 mins to help with the spitting up. Just keep at it!

I agree with this. Also, from what I've read, the amount of spit up always looks like much more than it actually is.
This is very true. I dropped an ounce of breastmilk on the floor the other day (the travesty!) and it looked like I had flooded the kitchen.

  • I know it sounds silly but if maybe you burp more it will help. I burp my little one every ounce (BM in a bottle too) and he barely spits up. We can usually get anywhere from three to four ounces this way. Good luck and don't give up :-)
  • I thought that gaining 1/2 to 1 oz per day was normal.  Why is the doctor so dissappointed that your LO is ONLY gaining 1/2 oz per day?  That's all my DS gained the 3 weeks between his weight check and one month appointment.
