Trouble TTC

Time off from work

How is everyone handling all the time off from work? Does your boss know why you?re taking off so much?

For myself, I have to take an hour of sick leave for every appt and I have 4 appt?s per cycle. Oct and Nov is our really busy time at work (late nights and working on the weekend), so I was dreading my boss asking me why so much leave and at the most inconvenient time of the year, but so far he hasn?t said anything. Hopefully he keeps it that way!

Re: Time off from work

  • Luckily I'm able to schedule all of my appointments early in the morning so I go before work.

  • My Re office opens at 7am and they have satellite offices as well in the area. I usually have my ultrasounds before 8am and it gives me enough time to get to work. The only appts I have had to take time off for are the actual IUI's.

My boss was getting suspicious. I didn't want to tell her because I felt like I'd get upset..which I did...but I've never gotten any hassle about it. But, I do feel like some coworkers are wondering what's going on.

My RE also opens at 7AM, but that's what time I start work. Luckily I work from home 3 out of 5 days a week, so I rearrange my schedule accordingly with my boss, so I don't think it's noticeable with my coworkers.  But I'm sure my boss is probably wondering what's going on.

  • I told my boss a few weeks ago what we are going through and thus far she's been very supportive.  I use vacation time vs sick time because I have to use all my vacation time before the end of the fiscal year but can carry up to 26 weeks of sick time.  I'm saving as much sick time as possible because this will be the bulk of my maternal make up.

  • I don't have a problem getting time off for work. One of my boss's & his wife have been through all this IF stuff already so it's easy for me to explain why I need time off. He & his wife TTC for 10 years & went through 4 IVF's. It was the 4th one that was they charm for them. They have a 3 year old little boy now. He really understands what we are going through.

  • So far I'd been taking sick days. Since I'm a nurse and we work as a whole shift, I'm not able to take long lunches or go in late/leave early. I was talking with my RE about it a few weeks ago and he actually told me a lot of his patients who work my kind of shifts take FMLA for it. IF is a medical condition requiring office apts so it qualifies. After the paper work is turned in you just call and tell your work you're taking an FMLA day. They can't say no and it does not count against you.

  • It's still unpaid (unless you have PTO you can apply) but if you work at a place like mine, it really helps. We only get 10 "occurrences" a year and with so many apts plus any general illness you may get, it's going to save my butt. LOL.. I currently have 9 of my 10. Oops.

  • This is something I am really worried about...and will probably post about too come January. lol. I just started my job back in April, but I just transferred departments so I still have a motherload of vacation and sick time. However, because I am new, I can tell my boss isn't keen on me taking a lot of time off. I mean, I have, but I just know she isn't thrilled about it. Anyhoo, January is a very busy time for us, so I am almost postive any time off requests would be denied. Not sure what I will do - either lie and say I have an urgent procedure I need done, or just call in sick on my ER and ET days. I just can't put off IVF another month...

  • I usually just find someone to cover my shift for a couple hours if my appt is on a day I work. My boss really doesnt care as long as I have someone to cover me and I have the PTO.

That's totally how I feel.  If my boss does ask I will tell him the truth and let him know that I'm not delaying having a child just because it's a bad time at work.

  • I felt the need to tell my boss (and it went really well) since I have to take off either a half day or whole day for appointments that I can't get before or after school starts. No taking a long lunch or an hour here or there which sucks. However it's only Nov. and I only have 1.5 days left for this school year (that's until the beginning of June!). So if this cycle doesn't work, we'll be taking a break until next summer.
