Healthy Kids Food for Birthday Party?

Hi Ladies!  Trying to plan DDs 6th bday, and finding that I want to make 100 sweets and nothing I'd actually want my kid to eat.  Don't want the parents to hate me when I send hope sugar crazed kids, you know?  Wink

I'm trying to come up with healthy foods that wil look cute on the table, and can be served in small portions.  So far I have:

Healthy"ish": popcorn - veggies with hummus - yogurt covered raisins - goldfish - cheese and turkey cubes (or pinwheels, not sure)

The "naughty" stuff: chocolate covered pretzels - cake pops - meringue cookies and of course, birthday cake.

Any ideas for the healthy list?  Thanks!

Re: Healthy Kids Food for Birthday Party?

  • I don't think you have to worry about coming up with more food options than what you have here.  For my son's 6th birthday, the kids were WAY more interested in playing than eating.  I had several types of snack foods out in bowls, and they all got nibbled on, but none of the bowls were empty at the end of the party.

I had two cakes.  DS wanted his favorite pokemon on his cake, so I got a bakery cake with Typhlosion on it.  However, his best buddy is allergic to eggs, so I also made an egg-free cake from scratch.  I had so much doggone cake left that DH had to take it into his office to give away!

Unless you expect parents to accompany their kids (unusual for a 6 y/o party) you are probably in good shape for food!

FWIW, as a parent I would appreciate that you offered some healthier choices, but I would fully expect my unattended kiddo to eat nothing but goldfish, chocolate pretzels, and cake. It's a party; they're going to nosh on junk -- it's just part of being a kid.

  • ITA, they will play vs. eat.  I would do exactly what you're doing, some easy finger foods that they'll eat the last 1/2 hour of the party before the cake.

  • Thanks Ladies!  I have to remember to limit myself - you're right - they will play.  At the last party my DD went to she only a 1/3 or her pizza slice. Ugh.  I'll chill.

The parents will be there, but mostly because we're all friends.  I have a coffee bar set up for them, so I think I'll be covered.  Also don't want everyone to be full before dinner...

    Thanks!
