Should I be concerned? Spitting up

Hi, I'm a fairly new poster, but you all have provided a ton of great information on other posts and I'm hoping you can help me with a 2 part issue.

I have 3 month old b/g twins. My DD is a little peanut but eats great, where DS is a little tank and spits up a ton. DS was diagnosed with reflux at 8 weeks and per our pedi we've been thickening his formula and were using the crib lift thingy (I don't know what else to call it). He'd been doing better, with less spit up and we removed the crib lift as he would constantly roll off of it into his sister. But over the past week he has started spitting up a ton again. I've done the research that says all is normal as long as he's growing ok but my MIL (who's their primary caregiver while DH and I are at work) is still super worried. DS is a happy baby, cooing and talking all of the time even right before/after he spits up and he's growing good (16 lbs and 26 inches!). I guess my question is, is it normal to go through phases of being really spitty and then not, is worth calling my pedi over? Anyone else have this happen? What did you do; beside lots of laundry?

Also, my MIL, is a blessing, but also relies on me to give her all information regarding these things when she has questions, which is fine because I'm the Mom and I'm glad she comes to me and doesn't just make an executive decision, but then she continually questions my decision making. Err! Any suggestions on dealing with her on this topic would be great too. TIA!!!

Re: Should I be concerned? Spitting up

  • We had a spitter that spit what seemed like huge amounts after every bottle for more than ten months. She spit in between bottles. She spit in her bed. She wore a bib almost exclusively for eight or nine months. Once she started sitting up it got a little better, but it took forever to go away.

At the same time, she's always been in at least the 85th percentile for weight, and was off the chart for height at 12 months. As long as your little dude keeps growing, there shouldn't be anything to worry about! (I know this is hard to do when you watch them spit up what seems like everything they just ate.)

  • I had two VERY spitty boys.  The would spit up after every feeding.  But they did not show any signs of being in pain or discomfort, and they continued growing well, so my pediatrician was not concerned.  He deemed them "happy spitters."  It's just gross and yesm, creates a lot of laundry!  They grew out of it once they started eating solids, around 6 mos.  Some things that helped were feeding them at a 45 degree angle, and feeding them small amounts with lots of burping in between.

As far as your MIL, I used the doctor as  the authority a lot.  I would say, "Well, I was concerned, too, but I talked to their doctor and he said xyz."  Or, "I asked their doctor about it and he said to look for these signs & symptoms, and if they don't have that, don't worry."  Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies! Guess I just needed a little reassurance. Phew!!!
