The great room swap

I'm totally thinking ahead here.

Our upstairs has 2 bedrooms.  One currently occupied by DH and I, the other by DS.  Its relatively small.  Small enough for an armoire, changing table and crib.  Thats about it.

Our downstairs has a bedroom relatively comparable to our bedroom upstairs.

We've had our house on the market now for 3 years and well it just aint movin so I really don't have any option but to think about what I'm going to do w/ the new addition that I obviously hadn't planned on having until we found a bigger place with 3 bedrooms upstairs. Like I said before, someone obviously had bigger plans for me.

So for those that have had to do this, do I move DS downstairs to the bigger bedroom?  I'm thinking about buying another identical set of furniture to his current furniture. Lord knows I'm not moving that crap downstairs.  He's still using the crib portion (haven't thought about toddler bed nontheless full sized).  He'll be 26 months when this one arrives.  Am I crazy for thinking I can move him downstairs and put him in a full size bed?  When were your kids ready for a big boy bed?  Should I just keep his room the same and put the baby downstairs? The room isn't quiet big enough to move DH and I downstairs.

Gahhhh... the things I worry about when I'm sittin here bored at work.

  • I'd put him upstairs, and I'd move downstairs if it were me.  I'd be nervous to have him downstairs by himself at that age.

  • I am not sure I'd want my 26mo on a separate floor but he should be ready for a big bed by then. DD went to a queen with a rail at 21 mo old. You can also keep #2 in a bassinet for a couple of months in your room.

Honestly thats one thing I'm totally against. They have bedrooms for a reason.  DS was in his crib from the moment we bought him home and I really think it helped us to establish good sleeping habits early on.

  • We have a similar setup to yours - two bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs. If we were having another kid right now, I think we'd probably take over the downstairs bedroom ourselves and put both of the kids upstairs.

  • Would you consider having you and DH take the smaller room (DS's current room) and having the two kids share the master bedroom?  It might not be as nice, but you'd all be on one floor at least until they got a little bigger, or the LO is STTN.  You could put your bigger furniture in the downstairs bedroom and go down there to get dressed, etc. It depends what's more inconvenient or worrisome for you - being on a different floor or having all your stuff on a different floor.

I think that's a great idea! There's no way I'd want a little one on an entirely separate floor -- personally, I'd rather we all squeezed into two bedrooms one way or another in that situation.

July 3rd, 2012 ~ Hang in there sweetheart, we can't wait to meet you!

  • we have 2 bedrooms upstairs & 1 downstairs.

Sprout's room is upstairs (and will any future kid) & ours is downstairs.  I'm slightly concerned for when he moves into a big boy bed & knows how to open doors, but we're teaching him how to go down the stairs safely.

i really like sleeping on a different floor.  first off, we can be noisy w/ watching tv & cleaning up at night & it doesn't disturb him (it would, if he was downstairs). secondly, he's a loud sleeper w/ tons of kicking the crib & crying out & other stuff.  if we slept next door to that, I doubt i'd ever get a good night's sleep!
